3.8L upgrade?

saw this on rennlist

I say we start a poll and goad Jack O into adding this to BB while it is in for repairs...haha

I've always wanted to upgrade a 993 to a 3.8L road car...
or get a 993tt and convert to a GT2 EVO 3.8L turbo

he is asking 4500

I've looked into this. If you can get a great deal on the parts, and do virtually all the work yourself, I think it's viable. I think this is what Bill V is doing. Otherwise it's a huge amount of money for relatively modest hp gains.

The economical way to do the 3.8 for a guy like me (little time, fewer skills) is to buy a 3.8 motor that's up and running and sell the 3.6.

In terms of bang for buck, the 3.6 was a very easy choice. I paid $5000 for my 250-hp motor, doubling my 2.2-powered car's output.

Beyond that, the benefits get scary-expensive for smaller gains. I think the Protomotive turbo upgrade (at about $12,000) would be the most economical and reliable way to jack up my 3.6 -- it gets you 400 hp. Aside from that, I always keep my eyes open for low-mileage 3.8's.

Jack's got enough on his plate w/ the front end rebuild(and RSR flares and bumpers and maybe a center mounted cooler? )

There are 2 different sets of Mahles for that application the slip ins that go for $2500-3500 a set and the case mods sets that go fo $5500-6500 a set. The slip ins are thin and I wonder about the recent bore part.

After extensive discussion w/ some of the most prominant engine builders in N.A. the consesus was, that the manifolds were not necessary, but porting and blending of the stock heads was very worthwhile as was updating valve train components, injectors can also be changed out productively w/o resorting to the raised RS type(many wouldn't use them even if the full kit was purchased). If necessary all of those parts are available from Gert Carnewal for roughly half of the listed prices. There was a lot of debate about the desireability of the huge ss valves, it all came down to race? oder street?

Can't remember if I posted already this but another guy (not my engine guy) I spoke to recently here in New Zealand (he sold Marcesq his engine actually) has a 3.8 with "sport" cams (from memory - not sure what he means).

It still has the standard induction (no idea if standard = 964 or 993 or 993 Vario) and he firmly believed (and had researched) that individual throttle bodies were only needed for good power above 7000rpm.

His car (an SC or 3.0 Carrera with RSR bodywork) was pretty quick in the Targa NZ. He said he had 305hp (same tuner as me, so 1.1x factor = 277hp at wheels). Uses MoTeC, I think.

The car hauled away much quicker than the 993 RSs. It wasn't far off the 996 GT2 and the 996 Turbo.

That was the universal opinion on this side of the pond also. For a race car Motec or equivalent is expensive but mandatory, for a street car varioram was the desireable setup. Displacement is a great substitute for technology.

wow can't wait to hear about the 3.8L

I think a 993 Carrera 2S with 3.8L is THE perfect car...do some mild lightening of the car...now that would be sweet...

or a 993 2WD 3.8L EVO twin turbo...that would be sick

dream dreams dreams...i gotta finish the targa first...sheesh

MJ, Porsche (for once) actually deliver on both of these:

"993 Carrera 2S with 3.8L is THE perfect car...do some mild lightening of the car...now that would be sweet..."

is a 993 RS

And, "993 2WD 3.8L EVO twin turbo...that would be sick"

Is a 993 GT2 (not sure about 3.8, but otherwise yes).

Cool, huh??
