Dreaded 915 transmission shifting problems
79 911 SC. I am having trouble with finding all gears. Replaced all bushings, WEVO shifter and coupler. Adjusted it countless times and can only get 1st through 4th but not 5th and reverse. When I adjust to get 5th and reverse, then I can't get 1st and 2nd. Now it seems that is stuck in gear. I can't move the shift coupling by hand to neutral or rotate it at all. It seems struck. I do not have it connected to shifter no at all. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks |

Prior to putting the WEVO unit in how did it shift? If it shifted fine then it is an adjustment issue.
You have to adjust for left right (counter cw/cw) on the coupler and also for for and aft. When going to a WEVO or Rennshifter the depth of the shift (for/ aft) seems to be more critical. On my Rennshift unit it would actually stick in a gear (2nd) and not want to come out...I adjusted the coupler a tad (very small movements) so it would not go into that gear as deeply. No issues after that. If you had shifting issues prior to the WEVO it will just make them more pronounced.

Sounds like my box pre rebuild. PO adjusted it to favour the 1-2 shift, but as a result the 5th and reverse were so bad that the reverse lockout was not engaging. I got the gears fine however. I think it was just abysmal adjustment.
I have a wevo now too. My only thought is that in 4th under hard throttle the shifter taps.

When you did the bushings did you replace the shift rod bushing at the bottom of the shifter housing? If you did you may have reinstalled the metal bracket that holds the bushing backwards.

Drop the shift fork plate at the bottom of your trans and make sure all four studs are well seated in the plate, and the four nuts holding the shift fork itself are also tight.
Be sure to drop a magnet into the pan you drain your trans oil into to check for teeth. I would use Kendall as your replacement trans fluid.

Jack the rear wheels off the ground. If you're currently in gear and have pressure built against the gear then it will possibly seem to stick. If still stuck then try turning the wheels by hand back and forth why someone jiggles the shifter.

Is the car stuck in reverse? If so it might be the reverse light actuator pin is stuck in the out position. I've done that when I farked up a shift linkage adjustment. The remedy was to remove the reverse light switch and push in the pin with a suitably sized rod. It's messy if the gbox isn't drained. You'll loose a couple of cupfulls of oil, be prepared.

Sorry for late response but your input is much appreciated. Bought the car mid summer. Car in beautiful shape but previous owner said first gear synchro was out. Drove it home about 8 miles in 2nd and 4th gear. Took inspection plate off and shift fork bolts literally fell on garage floor. Thought I had problem solved. Lock tight and reinstalled and first gear was there!!! Got stock shifter to to make the up gears, 1st and 3rd And sometimes 5th. Then readjusted and could get 2nd, 4th and reverse. Finally replaced bushings and swepco. Still couldn't get all gears. Got WEVO shifter and coupling. This past weekend installed and shifted through gears with engine running in garage. Shifter would feel like it hung up when trying 5th and reverse. I now can not move the shift coupling by hand. The car is in neutral but it just feels like the shaft is hanging inside the transmission.

I'm going to try to move the wheels while trying to free the shift coupler. Will let you know results. Thanks again!
