replacing 79sc distributor help

79sc, bad distributor.

I have a rebuilt distributor ready to drop in. Is this as simple as making note of where current distributor is, sliding out, sliding new one in exactly where rotor was, button up, double check timing.

Im guessing it should probably be put at top dead center, but how do I turn engine over by hand. If i turn alternator nut, the fan just spins not cranking the motor. There is no way to get to crank pulley bolt without taking exhaust off, dropping engine tin, and removing carrier.

You can use the alternator nut if you press gently on one side of the belt to take up the slack.

for your fist question, it was that simple for my 3.2 (drop in), but I don't have points to contend with. The O-ring may resist a little.

Make sure you're at TDC and the rotor is pointing to #1

Try tightening your fan belt by one shim, maybe 2. It is a lot easier to adjust the belt to the proper tension than the other alternatives you listed.

Your first statement/procedure is correct, just make sure the rotor is aligned to the same degree as the one removed, then use the distributor body rotational to set/correct the timing.

Spinning Crankshaft to TDC

Remove the plugs if you can't get the belt to grab good enough to spin the motor.
