915 Transmission knowledge needed

Guys,

Please enlighten me on the difference between a North America 1986 915 transmission verses a Euro?
I'm working on a 1984 3.2 project. There seem to be a shortage of the 915/73 (85.5-1986) year available on the market. I will be in the UK for a couple of weeks and was wondering if I should snag one before I return back to the US.
Your assistance would be very helpful.

I don't know about ratios but a UK/Euro would have a transmission cooler, which is a nice touch. Cheers

you won't likely find a 915/73 USA trans in Europe, but look for for a 915/67, 915/69 or
915/72. All are '84-'86 xaxles with oil coolers and slightly different gear ratios. One difference between all the '84 models and the 85.5-1986 is the later use a 108mm output flange (larger axles) instead of the earlier 100mm flanges. However
they are easily swapped.

85.5-86 axle flanges can be installed into any 915 transaxle. It's preferable to use an alloy unit for the additional strength, but even an SC unit can be notched to provide clearance for the flywheel sensors.

I've even notched magnesium trannys (carefully) and used them with a 3.2 in a pinch.

Not just ANY 915 can use 108mm axle flanges! Several earlier 915s (pre 911SC) use course spline flanges, whereas the 108mm and 100mm flanges on 911SC and later are fine spline and can be interchanged..

Here are the gear ratio comparisons between the US and RoW 3.2 915s, the other big difference is the RoW have integral coolers, US do not

I think UK pricing AND the exchange rate will blow any chance of this out if the water.

Start calling local Pcar shops. Often mechanics have old core sitting around. At Christmas time a couple extra grand off the books can go a long way. Something that might not be for sale in March might be sold to buy a big tv or a bike for his kid.
