I found some info on the relationship of CHT and EGT.. after you hit the site, go to p. 24, 25, 26..

my up-grade from the CHT only to a combo instrument is in motion

Have you settled on a unit? How and where are you going to mount it?

I ordered the JPI 700 6c unit.. it'll be mounted on the console.. the ga. itself is 2 1/4in.. the outside box is not much bigger, but it's 7 1/2in deep.. alarm will trigger for pinging, clogged carb, etc.. read the pfd from the site I just posted.. I'm not saying this is necessary for everyone.. I have special needs on my rides for sure..........Ron

I came across this on the Westach web page. It is 3" which is a little smaller that the 3.125" Porsche clock gauge. With a little work it would fit in nicely.

It is nice because you see boost and EGT on the same gauge. If your really insane you could put a 6 way switch to monitor all EGTs.

I am floored. The EDM-700 sounds like a data junkie's ultimate fix. Combine with a racing datalogger and you'd have data coming out of your ears.

Ronin LB, can you explain a little bit how you plan to install and use the EDM? Which of its 24 engine temperature, flow, rpm, and pressure monitoring functions (wow) are you going to use, and what work will be required to install the sensors? Are you getting the Long Term Memory Option? What is this $150 harness you referred to? How did you find anything related to the EDM-700 that was as cheap as $150?

I'll have to enjoy this vicariously through you, as the price is out of my league, so please start delivering the vicarious enjoyment . . .

yeah.. it's the ultimate fix, LOL

I'm only interested in EGT and CHT.. no need for the rest, I think..

the CHT probes replace the spark plug gaskets, and the EGT probes are installed by drilling a hole in the exhaust tubes.. the $150 was for the extended harness.. so it's a simple install that gives extraordinary information when combining the outputs of the EGT & CHT on each cylinder.. if you can download the Acrobat Reader file from the site that I posted you'll read about diagnosing pinging, clogged spark plugs, poor valve adjustment, weak cyl compression, etc.. the alarms are cool........Ron

under $2k... so it's what you find important, priority wise. I'd rather have this unit than new wheels.. a good audio install can cost $2k.. what's the shop cost for updating your G-50, new clutch, and a tune up??.......Ron

Knowing Ron, I can understand why he wants this. He's a guy who doesn't need unanswered questions, and the questions he asks are legit ones. With this unit in place, there won't be much going on in the engine that he won't know about...

Posted a pic of my installation. Worked out better than I had hoped. Whenever the engine skips a beat, is rough...I can usually track it to the cylinder that's suspect. Very Nice!!

Yes, one of them is pegged high. I'm ringing out wires while engine is out.

Ron:

Keep us updated on your fittment. I'll be running a Motec with 6 VDO cht's. I placed the cht sensors on the standard motronic cht sensor location on ALL heads. Had some special bolt made to mount and clear during motor assembly. Works great but I think the EGT would be nice for futher tuning but no more room in my console. In aviation and I knew about these units but hadn't heard of anyone using for aircooled auto application. Looking forward to hearing more....

the CHT/EGT combo is intense for monitoring.. you could get a duel CHT/EGT gauge for each cylinder.. your install does look good..

when I spoke to JPI, the tech never heard of it being ordered on a car.. although the JPI owner has it on his BMW.. but the tech figured it was probably for PR

so my unit is being made up at JPI.. then drop shipped.. then I gotta match up the EGT probes to the SSI.. I figure 2 weeks before I have it installed/at least. this unit, and a bunch of other stuff is being done as prep work for new cams and PMOs.....Ron

Let us know how it works on the SSIs. That is my sticking point for now, with my luck I am almost certain to break an exhaust stud.

thanks Tony.. that seems to be the educated opnion.. I heard that Sherwood has a drain plug from a Toyota in his SSI.. gotta get some hard info before I order a stainless bolt and tweak it to length.. I should buy anything local at M18x1.5 to test fit.. I also got info that a spark plug will fit/Autolite 45..........Ron
