On removing the inlet manifold and CIS all in one piece..
Hi folks, just searching around for this, and mainly found this thread..
Is it possible to remove the intake manifold with the CIS on top of it? I have just dropped the motor on my new to me 79 SC which was running really well, but I discovered 2 broken head studs at the first valve job (it was bought as a project with unknowns accepted). Ideally I would like to do head studs and top end work as needed, but leave other things undisturbed if possible. I am going to strip the block as much as I can before driving it to my specialist. I have looked at the CIS removal instructions, and it looks pretty time consuming and complicated. And I am mindful of the number of times in searches people say 'putting to back together is the fun part'. At the same time, it does look pretty straightforward to remove the 13mm manifold bolts, plus a couple of other bits and pieces, before lifting the whole CIS, air box and manifold assembly off the top of the motor..(and replace all as a piece too) - so, why not? Cheers!

If the engine is out it is relatively easy. Have at it.

Take it off and apart. New intake couplers and a few gaskets(throttle body and air sensor plate assembly) are cheap and easy to replace. Inspect the airbox and associated vacuum lines and hoses for cracks/leaks. Clean everything and reassemble.

It's possible to get it off in one piece, but not likely. You'll probably find that the intake couplers are a little loose and as soon as you try to lift the whole assembly that things may fall apart (aka "the arms come off the octopus").

It's possible but you would have to at least do a partial drop to take it out in one piece. The intake runners tend to bind up on the studs that the intake runners are fastened to so it would be very difficult to remove it in one piece I would imagine. It's also quite heavy with everything attached so you would be battling with that.
The biggest thing would be removing the breather hose. That has to come off before you can remove the airbox and you have to be able to get under it to remove the hose from the port on the engine. |
