Which throttle return spring where?

Team, I had a hunch that my throttle return spring may be giving up, so I ordered a replacement from our host. I ordered two actually, because there were two types and I figured one would match.

What I received were two different springs, both of which say they work on an 82 SC. Can anyone confirm which one I should use (if either) and whether or not one of these matches the stock spring (maybe mine was replaced?)

One seems too long, one too short - Goldilocks style. Mine is the rusty one in the middle. I tried the short one, it fits but doesn't seem to work well to return the throttle, and also seems to be too stretched out in its rest position.

Any thoughts/ideas of where these go -- and/or a part number on that middle spring? Thanks in advance.

These two are 930.111.497.00.OEM (left obviously) and 911.110.165.02.M100 (right)

I assume the center one was the original, yes?

Use the one on the left. I am surprised the new one is so much more shorter

The right one is for under the intake manifold ( there are two )

Some of us actually double up on the spring for extra measure of safety.

Jim, OP said the short one doesn't work.
Jason - I would look into this further - I've ordered springs before (for my 3.2) and had similar issues with the PN not matching the product - but in this case I question the PET catalog too.
The use of the word "Short" in the nomenclature gives me pause too.

Thanks guys, I found the location of the long one. That's the one you double up?

Dan, will check out the PN on the other one.

Bonus find: I removed one of the two screws holding my cruise control cable bracket to the throttle, and loosened the other screw just enough so that the bracket could spin, and I used that spin feature to spin the bracket towards me, so the CC cable is guaranteed loose.

Throttle return and idle speed are a bit better. So I was/am getting some CC cable binding. Need to look into that later. For now, springs...

You might try ordering the genuine Porsche version of that spring , if it's not NLA.

Second option would be to talk to a spring supplier and match what you have. Last option, there's another spring listed on the cruise control page, yo might order it and see what you get. Part number 911.110.227.00.

Thanks Draco. Is your "short one" that long in the rest position?* Meaning is it stretched like that when the throttle is fully closed?

I counted and that spring has 12 coils, like the one I have and like the one I received from PP. But yours is not as stretched as mine.

*Ronnies.930 will have fun with that one, I predict.

Yeap, that sure is :-)

Post a pic of yours, put a ruler to it and I will measure mine. I am curious to see how your mount is sitting. It may be tweeked or mine may be.

The distance between the top and bottom spring holes is 2.5" almost exactly. Pic is below. The short spring I got from Pelican (left spring in my first post) measures 1" at rest. You can that see the spring that I have in there now, almost isn't stretched at all. I'm now wondering if that inspection tag (or whatever the bent thing is) is causing problems, had never seen it before this pic.

Hmm. I just never seen a spring like yours.

Confirmed, from spring hole to spring hole = 2.5" as well.

Yes, check the travel to insure the tag does not interfere.

So you have the 1" spring? Can you take one end free and measure it? Hate to ask, NBD if you can't.

I didn't measure mine accurately, but the coil part is about a half-inch(?) when not under tension and not counting the connecting ends. It looks like the new one in the bag on the left in your first picture. Coil length is as long as it is wide. My '87 (and I think DRACO's too )btw calls for the same part number 930.111.497.00.

I re-try yours out and if it looks like ours, you should be GTG - assuming you check out that interference issue with the 'quality' tag :-).

One more word of advice. Now that you're replaced those and everything is under the right amount of tension, check the throttle linkage at the tranny for rotted bushings and the pedal area to make sure that is OK. After I did this simple fix for my high idle, my bushings at the tranny crumbled, the linkage broke, the car stuck WOT on the road, revved like hell and stripped a few adjuster screws for the valves. Still not totally right. All for a 50 cent piece of plastic. At least it fixed the idle haha

An a "rule" I learned from a race Driver: allways have a spare spring in the glove box!
Because, if it rips, your stuck!
