Rear-view mirror adhesive

Any recommendations on a rear-view mirror adhesive? I tried Permatex twice now with the same dismal results. It seems that the base of the mirror for my '78 911SC (not the round one) is too heavy for the adhesive to work. It seems Porsche has changed the design so there isn't a lightweight tab to attach and just the heavy base. Stephen

Clean both surfaces with denatured alcohol , Use Loctite Super Glue Ultra Control Gel and just a tiny drop, use too much of any adhesive and it wont work!

No luck with the Loctite, the mirror base appears to be too heavy. It seems like I would have to hold it for 30 minutes to hold.

Use the super glue and secure with painters tape over night. Then mount the mirror.

I used a piece of the throw away part of the 3m adhesive for an iPhone screen 4 years ago!
I kept another piece for when I replace the windshield someday.
3M 200MP is what the peel off label says. Google it to find a piece I guess?

Here ya go this is the stuff, read the specs 400F heat resistant to -40F it is on eBay and other places. This site had the specs.

A couple of years ago I replaced my front windshield and had to replace the mirror. I went through 2 or 3 brands of glue from the local auto parts stores. They were all junk. Mirror kept falling off. I found some good stuff online - I might have bought it at Amazon. Anyway, I saved the packaging in case I ever needed to order it again. I will dig it up when I get home. Follow the directions. Clean with denatured alcohol and let it sit for 24 hours before attempting to put any weight on it.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

+1 on cleanliness, small qty, overnight cure.
Use Loctite from our host 37438-M258. Good price.
Suggest you use razor blade to get all residual adhesive off mounting piece. You want a flat smooth surface so sandpaper or aggressive scraping is counterproductive.
I use "Pre" paint prep from Eastwood to be certain the surfaces were clean.
Cleaned both glass area and mount, cleaned twice, allow to dry.
Just a drop of adhesive as instructed (you want a very thin bond line for max strength).
Press on and hold fixed with pressure as long as your arms can take (maybe 3 minutes).
Tape in place (blue paint tape) and let cure overnight.
I got away with mounting mirror and base all in one shot.

How do you remove it? Mine is mounted too high. At the edge of the top/rubber seal.

I guess PO must have been really tall.

Thanks for your ideas/input

I tried and tired to reattach my rear view mirror on another 914-6 I had after it fell off. No joy. I dropped into a glass/windshield shop and they attached it in 5 minutes for $20. Never moved after that.

Check the internet for the 3M vhb 4991 used by GoPro to stick their cameras in place. You'll need to use two pieces cut to fit on your mirror base. Clean both surfaces with acetone and push securely
into position. No holding. You're done.

Finally success, I ended up using the Loctite Super Glue Ultra Control Gel and had to hold it in place with packaging tape. The painters tape wouldn't adhere to the windshield.

Always put a small bit of tape over the screw hole on those large bases. If the glue migrates into the threads, good luck mounting the mirror. I use JB weld and gaffer's tape to hold it while it sets. Take the tape off when it's semi set and trim the squeeze-out with a safety razor blade.

JB Weld is a two-part epoxy and fairly aggressive, but that's what I used to install the mirror mount on the glass after 3-4 tries with various mirror-specific glues - NG IMHO.
