Carpet kit question

I see AppBiz and Pelican ( one in the same for carpet kits) show 85-89 as different than up to 84 .
Neither shows images so trying to figure out the difference.
I know someone out there know for sure ( no guesses please)
Thanks for the help

I am debating whether or not to do this myself or use an upholstery shop. I would think that it is something that I can handle myself but I want the job to look as if the carpeting was never replaced, which is why I'm considering subletting this out. I have received samples from Pelican based on the color I am matching. The samples that I received are from World Upholstery. They were not quite the same color as my interior (linen) so I was searching the internet and stumbled across www.worlduph.com so I contacted them with my questions about color. They sent me some samples that were right on the money as far as color match (yes, I am aware of slight variation based on material batch but the sample was almost dead on). Last week, I had taken my car to two different custom shops so they could quote me on installation. I have yet to hear back from one of them but they both said they have used World Upholstery carpet kits, seat covering, door panel covers and headliners on various cars and they both liked them very much. If you go to the AppBiz website, you will find very limited availability in products for the later Carreras, especially the G50 cars. You should speak with customer service at Pelican but I believe they will tell you that the reason is because of the limited availability of product and AppBiz is considerably cheaper in price.
p.s. take a look at the material for the carpeting, it will be pretty obvious.
Best of luck to you getting the carpet you want.

carpet

Thanks Mike
I am trying to determine the difference in the cuts (pieces) of the up to 84 and 85-89 kits not the fabric. But you did point out something I got wrong...Pelican sells Appbiz panels ( door and package tray) and I mistakenly applied that to carpeting which is not necessarily the case as you pointed out.
I will check out World stuff as I only need partial kit and getting match to factory pieces is also high on my list.
Thanks

The main difference, and only difference I know of between up to 84 and 85-89
is the carpet pieces for the left and right footwells. Early cars have the map pockets, whereas the 85+ have a completely different setup to cover the footwell blowers.

If you are lucky enough to get an answer....

I initially installed their kit but had problems with some of the pieces. I have now ordered a set from Lakewell to complete the car but have yet to receive it. They say their carpet construction matches the factory closely which the Appbiz set doesn't do in some places.

I believe the difference is indeed in the footwell area which seems to have a pocket there in the older models.

I couldn't agree more on the superiority of the Lakewell carpet products. I originally got a carpet set from AppBiz and wasn't thrilled with the quality. I then resold the kit on Pelican and ordered a set from Lakewell. Their product is so close to the factory original that I defy most folks to discern the difference. i.e. the floor mat pieces use the identical black heavy backing as the factory. I have never seen any domestic suppliers to use the right backing! Lakewell also offers most all factory colors. Even with shipping from Europe, (due to the great $-Euro exchange rate) my carpet set came in cheaper than most of the US suppliers!

I just got my kit from Lakewell, ahead of the scheduled delivery date. I have not installed any part yet but the quality of the kit is way above the Appbiz stuff and in line with the factory carpets.
Also Wouter is a really nice guy and very responsive.

Highly recommended.

+1 on Lakewell, I did my '86 targa earlier this year with one of their kits. Everything fit great, and their install videos on youtube were extremely helpful.

Classic 9 leather ship is also a great source for Carpet. All my door panels rear deck and replacement vinyl is from appbiz, Robert is very user friendly and will set up a time to talk. Same for Robert Budd from CLassic 9 leather shop. We are very fortunate to have such great vendor support (host included) for these great cars.

I R&R'd the carpeting on my '85 Cabriolet myself using the World Upholstery product. Everything from them stitched as per the original. The differences you asked about are in the presence (or lack thereof) the footwell blowers.Earlier models had map pockets sewn into the carpeting in the kick panel areas. The footwell blower kick panels have a different contour, so much so that the floor panels are cut differently as well.

Interesting...I just installed a squareweave Lakewell kit with RS rear seat delete on my 1985 Targa today and had fitment issues. I have the door still pieces and the rear side panel pieces that don't fit right. I really like the quality of the materials though.

Interesting. Are you sure they didn't send a coupe set by mistake? The four pieces you mention are the main ones that are different on a Targa/Cab from a coupe.
Just a wild guess.

It is possible, but the door sill pieces were too tall by over an inch which shouldn't be different. The r e was no way to trim them without having to find someone to bind the edges again.

There was no way the rear side pieces would fit...I tried for hours to solve that puzzle. I sent pictures to Lakewell and asked for help a few days ago. Still no response...

I do not regret my decision to use their product.

I'm sure Wouter will make everything right. I had a couple of concerns myself and he responded, albeit it took a few days. He has too good a reputation to risk an unhappy
customer!
