Common sockets, allen keys, nuts, bolts, screws and hardware kits.

So I was doing a search for some common metric nuts/bolts/screws/washers and such for my car in hopes that I could buy in bulk and not have to worry about matching and finding specific replacement hardware during my build.

In my research I did come up with some common socket and allen Key sizes FYI. I was also reading on the pros and cons of cad coated mild steel vs stainless (soft and galling) and even titanium (cost, some gall... match with steel nut). I know a guy that replaced every nut and bolt in his car with titanium, so I am going to see if he still has a purchase list for hardware, and share it here if he still does.

Feel free to add (correct) to the list. I can add to this original post for the benefit of others.

wrench/Socket sizes:
36mm - axle and flywheel nuts
36mm or 34 or 32??? - hard oil lines
27MM – steering wheel
24mm - ? fan pulley
22mm (87' car)- shock bolt
22mm - reverse switch and brake light switches (reverse offset wrench)
19mm deep socket – wheel lugs
8,10,13,15,17 - nuts and bolts
11mm 9, 14 (?) - for brakes and lines
9mm, 7mm - brake bleeders

Allen Keys:
3 mm - to adjust CIS enrichment
4 mm - shifter swivel
5 mm - 6 mm cap bolts on sheet metal and rocker shafts

8mm -
10mm - head nuts
12 or 13 mm? - rear toe adjusters

There are some things (reverse switch and brake light switches) that are an absolute bitch without a 22mm offset wrench.

8MM triple square bit needed for adjusting the door striker plate (if that's what you call it). You can buy a set of four or five different sizes for cheap at the right auto parts store.

Open the door and look at the door latch receiver on the door frame. 12 point female "allen" bolts. 12 point = triple square name.

That rear axle nut socket has to be 3/4" drive. You'll snap a 1/2" drive, ask me how I know.

allen keys should be high quality steel, such as Lisle or Snap On. I use my Craftsman punch set. Do not buy inferior quality steel punches.

I also have the set of Lisle press tools to install bearing races. Very handy.

An LM-1 is to die for. And I also bought the very spendy Sir Tools rear wheel bearing tool. I can do that job from start to finish in about an hour now.

Agree. The triple square bits I mentioned may also be purchased from NAPA. They are K-D brand and about $8 per bit.

The el-cheapo's will work because the load is small on the striker plate bolts. If you get into CV axles on a VW, don't skimp on these tools or you will regret it.

This thread has some links to hardware kits, including an interior screw kit. Very useful...

Sources for hardware kits?
