Engine stalling with headlights on
Hi everyone,
I have an '86 911 that stalls when I have my headlights on while the engine is still warming up. It doesn't stall after I've driven for about 10-15 minutes. What would cause this? Thanks! Christian |

i would check the charging system first. put a volt meter across the bat terminals and have a look at what the voltage is- should be in the 13-14.5 neighborhood.
if it idles kind of low on warmup the extra load the alt places on the motor could be enough to stall it. ive never heard of this particular issue. im not sure if the idle speed is adjustable on ur car- someone w/a carrera will chime in soon im sure

DME will control the idle but would not hurt to check the base idle by jumper B&C. If off by allot, the DME has to work extra hard to keep it at factory levels, not good for your DME.
+1 check the voltage after start then with the lights on. Report back.

stupid question, but wouldn't the idle control valve (ICV) handle this and, if voltage and base idle are good, wouldn't this behavior suggest a dirty/failing ICV?

IIRC, the DME doesn't work below a certain voltage. I'd check battery voltage with engine off, then on, seeing difference.
