Separating 915 gearbox from engine
I know this has been asked beforehand ,I've read the posts and looked on YouTube ,
But still have questions, I can't get the two parted I have removed the smaller lever arm from the throwout arm shaft but can not remove the long lever arm, there does not seem to be anything to stop the throwout arm moving as I try to slide the box back but it doesn't ? I read that I'm to rotate the bearing 90% , think that I'm just moving the outer race what is it that I'm trying to ? How do I know if I've done it ? Sorry if I come across a bit thick , right now I feel it ! |

The 90 degree rotation thing is 70-71 only. Is the long arm frozen to the shaft and hitting something as you pull back on the trans? I've seen the occasional pilot bearing seized to the end of the mainshaft.

There is a possible problem you're facing.
The short arm you remove is the clutch actuation. The long arm, with the spring is a helper arm but it is idle on the vertical shaft. It should spin freely allowing the throw out bearing to release the fingers of clutch actuator so the trans can pull free of the engine. What happens is the two metal surfaces, with out proper amount of lube freeze to each other not permitting the vertical shaft to spin and release the TOB. Heat here is your friend as is a air chisel with the pin point shaft if you long arm does not have a keeper pin in it. If you have a keeper in the long arm you will need to heat the arm at the shaft and float some oil or lube in. reattaching the short arm and using a hollow bar you should be able to make the vertical shaft spin. Thanks guys this is what I needed to know I can now forget about spinning the bearing , and concentrate on freeing the long arm in the knowledge that I'm doing the right thing .
The car has been in storage for 18 years so it's not surprising that the odd bit is seized , just got the brake calliper pistons freed using a grease gun as suggested on this excellent forum , I'm sure I'll need more advice as I move foreword with this Bob |

Thanks guys great advice I have today stopped messing with the bearing and begun what I had been trying in the past but now with more confidence heating and removing the long arm . It was tight but with plenty of heat it came off ,then the gearbox slid straight off , once again that's for your time in helping me ,bob
