Workshop vs Service Manual. Whats the diff? Bentley?
I am looking to get the most comprehensive manual on my '77 911s, to be used for servicing, repairs etc
I have a few on the net - but what is the difference between the workshop and service manuals? Is there a difference? I see some are sold by Bentley (although i have not found one for a '77), and others are from folks selling in binder etc... In your experience - which are the best?? |

There is no Bentley for the mid year cars. The workshop manuals and maybe a Chilton or Haynes are all there are.
The factory manuals have the correct information.

To me, the factory manuals are more accurate and a bit more focused / tailored, written for trained mechanics, and may cost more. The aftermarket (haynes) are more available, a little model-generic sometimes, more "how-to" oriented, sometimes have a typo or 3, and more widely used (or cursed at). I'd recommend getting chilton/haynes, and then the FM's if you had the money/inclination. I started with a haynes (and now never use it), rely on the Bently, but the only FM i bought is the schematic/wirelist set. I have also collected some other manuals that are more generic, like the Bosch engine management book, and of course, Wayne's 101 Project book.

At the risk of high jacking this thread, does anyone have the pages for the Differential section from a Porsche Manual? I have attached 2 sample pages from the manual that I have which I have been led to believe is from Porsche. The Differential section starts with page 390.

As with most Factory Shop Manuals, they are designed as a procedural process coupled with training. They are in no way considered a DIY instruction kit. That being said, this and many other forums coupled with the FSM are a formidable combo and will allow the average Joe plenty of knowledge/opportunity to do their own stuff. Having the paper and PDF copies of the FSM and Parts Catalog has been invaluable.

If you go up a few posts, Timmy2 has links to a pdf of the 1972-1983 Porsche workshop manual. The differential section starts on page 453 of 1005. Even though you have a 1985, you still have a 915 transmission, so the information in the 1983 should still apply, with few, if any changes. Mark

Are there any '87 workshop manuals floating around in PDF form on the internet? I can't find any used copies of real ones on EBay or Amazon. I've found the Bentley useful for the projects I've worked on so far, I'd like to have the factory info, as well.

The 72-83 manuals are helpful, but are not complete unless you also have the original 2-volume 65-71 set. The 72-83 manuals only cover things that are new or different from the 65-71 set.
The later 84-89 5-volume set is complete. Probably the reason there's not much demand for pdf version of those is that the Bentley manual is far more useful and DIY-friendly. I have all 3 FWM sets. |

Cannell site has been gone for years for downloads.
The link to my Dropbox file still works. Go back a few posts to Queenie’s post.
