Can't get fan belt tight enough even with zero shims.
This is for an 86 3.2. About a year and a half ago, the alternator died so I got it rebuilt. Since I had the whole thing apart, I got the fan, shroud and pulley powder coated and replaced the belt.
I'm a bit stumped here as I have no shims between the pulley and fan. The belt was ordered from our host based on what they said was the correct part. I'm 99% sure the alternator, fan and shroud are installed correctly. Any ideas?

The pulley and woodruff key are original to the car as I got it and the belt was tight prior to my alternator project. So, hopefully I just put the wrong belt on it.

A long shot but, worth checking the tightness on the bolts that fasten motor to the carrier. I had the same issue and later found the loose bolts.

You can get the OEM belt from a dealer. It will fit differently than what the host sells. The correct fitting belt will be hard to get on.
These may be helpful Anyone else's fan belt keep getting loose? Dealer alternator belt that is way too small/tight? (9.5 x 710)

Do you have the shim washer 930-106-564-00 in place? If not I'm guessing the pulley halves will be too far apart thus leading to your problem. Check parts diagram.

You must have ALL the shims installed. Moving them, not removing them tightens the belt.

^ this. There are six and all six must be positioned either before or after the belt in order for there to be aprox. 1/4" movement in the center of the belt via your finger pressure. The shim amount before or after determines the tightness.

^^+2,
Also check to make sure the fan housing is seated correctly. Long shot and hopefully not your issue. check the crank shaft pulley. Mine cam loose and mushroom the dowel pin on the crank shaft end.

You will not find a 9.5 x 710. they will say they sell it, they will even have pictures of a 9.5 x710 in their catalog. but when it comes it will be a 10 x 710. then you will call them and they will tell you it is interchangeable. Which is not true. Forget that is not what is shown in their catalog, and is not what you wanted. it may fit (in a way) but it is different. I know because I have purchase TWO that were both supposed to be 9.5 X710. One is in a Porsche box.

That said, a few of the shims are not in the greatest shape so i might order new ones. The belt sounds like the most likely culprit so I'm going to start with that. Thanks. all.

Yesterday, after topping off my oil, I noticed my NOS yellow labelled Conti's are starting to fray at the outer edge stitching. Oh the Joy ![]() Just ordered the "Porsche" Alt Belt #999-192-176-5A with a 911 DIYer at out Host's. He stated he was also having issues with his belt ( I assume white labelled Conti's ) and he wanted to try the PORSCHE Belt only to discover PAG has superceded the part# to end -5A instead of the old -50. Pelicans has not updated the catalog since it was a recent change by PAG. He further confirmed the PAG size is now 10.0MM X 710.0MM so 9.5 is NLA. So for me, it looks like 1 in 5 out like the old Yellow labelled Conti's. I chose PAG over Conti's because the inner cogging (ribbed) simply does not last as long, it causes an inherit split between the cogs and I was not looking forward to the new Conti's potential stretching as reported by some Pelicans. It is bad enough when the cogs break off right before FAILURE. Ask me how I know. Pelican Parts should really return all the white labelled ones in stock back to Conti to encourage them to fix the stretching issue or go back to their original formula or plant of manufacturing NOTE: I measured my old PAG belt ending in -50 made by Goodyear, after use it is 10.02MM wide ![]() ![]()

Belts.
![]() ![]() ![]() ^^^^^ azhodge is spot on. I went back & checked my notes, and these are the correct P/N's for our '86. Also, as per the picture, I used three shims between the pulley halves, and three under the cup. In the interest of clarity, I deleted my earlier post. Good luck, Gerry

I'll go to the dealer this week and get a belt or two from them. The one in there now is a toothed belt and the part number is 10A0710 (so not 9.5). I don't think I could own this car without this forum.

Well, I just picked up the Porsche belt from our Host.
Width is the same as my old Porsche belt but the length is a bit shorter visually, maybe the old belt stretched? Well a bit shorter is better than too long. Going to measure it accurately. $50, WTF ![]()

Okay you got the NOS ( like my old one made by Goodyear for Porsche ), but I bet if you measure it, you will find another figure :-/
Just installed the Porsche Optibelt, all went well Here is my frayed Conti belt ![]() Here is the new one ![]() 3 in 3 out. I did let the new belt sit in the engine bay while I was wait for her to cool down for me to work on her. Maybe that made the new belt more pliable??? Definitely more snug, started with no issues and alternator worked fine ![]()
