How Do I Install Hargett Shifter? (Parking Brake Questions Inside)

I bought a Hargett 915 shifter used, installing on my 82. Right away I'm already confused. The forward left side screw that holds the parking brake in place is not there, and there is no threading inside the hole like the other 2 parking brake screws. Wtf?

Secondly, with test fitting it seems like the defroster levers will not fit underneath the Hargett very well. I don't have heat so that's fine. Remove these?

Third, I have heard of some moving the parking brake to the place where the old shifter was. How do I extend the cables? Doesn't seem possible with that funky pull design.

Any other ideas or tips?

Thanks!!

I thought one could leave the parking brake in stock location and then extend the brake handle with some custom doohickey?
I'm guessing that the people who extend the cables pull the old cable out (hassle) and run a new one, just a guess though?
Did they sell two different models, maybe you have the wrong model?
If this is a race car then I say start ripping it a part.

It's a very agressive street car, haha. I would prefer to keep some sort of hand brake function and I do use it quite a bit.

The Hargett uses the three threaded holes that the hand brake / heater control uses. If you are missing a threaded insert you will need to install a new one. Even better, weld a new reinforcement plate over the tunnel that has nuts tacked in the right locations. This will not only solve your current problem but it will prevent flexing of the thin tunnel sheet metal when you are using the shifter.

Remove the heater levers from the hand brake assembly if you are not using them.

If you are going to retain the parking brake, you will need to take ALL the slack out of the cable and then extend the handle. You can use it as-is, but its a bit difficult to get to.

Interesting. Maybe it will be worth it to make that new plate, seems like either way I would need to weld on a new nut. There is an access hole next to the one with the missing nut, maybe my car came with just a nut and not a welded nut?

Still looking for more info on moving the parking brake towards the front. Or I could install a hydraulic handbrake but that seems even more complex.

Nice solution to the Hargett shifter handbrake problem.

I did get this installed. Used large aluminum plates under the Hargett like washers to help spread the load on the tunnel. Also used a simple nut on the back of the upper left screw hole, but had to take the center of the Hargett out to get to it. No big deal. Now porn time!

Somebody showed up at our local Cars & Coffee with an electric actuator mounted to the tunnel to yank on the parking brake cable. I didn't get a good look at the brand or any info, but it looked like a possible solution for this problem.

That's actually a really cool idea. Could remote mount it easily. See if you can get more info!
