Obscure O2 Sensor question - SC
Obscure question on SC Oxygen Sensors. Sorry that this will likely not be of interest to 99% of SC owners.
I run stock CIS with O2 connected and all components sorted and good. It took nearly two years to get it right and sorted, but it is nice. Great driveability, gas mileage and even keeled performance thru the rpm range. In reviewing parts diagrams, I stumbled upon the below part - O2 SENSOR SHIELD or some call it 'O2 Sensor Protection Plate'. 911-606-133-00 is the part #. Auto Atlanta has a note that is was only from MY 1983 upwards. If you drill into the diagram at the link below, it is part '6b'. It seems the part was added in 1983 and continued through the 3.2 series at least. Small shield that snaps onto your O2 sensor with the main shield towards outside of car. Does anyone know what this is for? Is it to 'protect' the O2 sensor (presumably from road debris or something), or is it a Heat Shield that aims to solve some sort of issue? Since 80-82 SCs did not have this (assuming *********** notation is correct - and seeing that my 81 does not have it), does anyone know of any particular problem this part solved or why added? Seems odd that it would be added for one year of the SC then carry forward. Perhaps I am thinking too deep, but would think there is a reason for adding this part. Anyone know? Thanks for reading. It's more like a stone guard to protect the sensor from impacts. Most guys leave it off or not replace it if broken/rusted off.

it is also used to keep the heat up, the later years came with an internal heater to get and keep the O2 sensor up to temp.
