Project Ground Zero

After quite a bit of 911 shuffling over the last fifteen years its finally come to this. Project Ground Zero. Take one very smart 911 mechanic, give him a straight, engineless, registered 1978 SC fitted with 930 guards, a late 915 gearbox, and the worlds worst interior, and see where it ends up.

Theres no time pressure nor any real direction yet, other than that the likely outcome will be a 1974 RS in street competition spec. Having owned and sold a 964RS, two 993 RS's, a 993 Turbo, two GT2's, a GT3, and several other 911's of less pedigree including a 1973 RS clone and a 1974 RS clone, it has been the two clones that provided the most fun and so we will head in this direction again. Weve got a bundle of interesting bits stashed away, some for trading, some to be used. I still do a bit of competition driving so it will need to be caged and harnessed but we have to keep it road registered so the front cage will need to be demountable.

Heres how it looks now. The photo is very flattering. The good news is that the car was delivered new without a sunroof, it has a very good dash, and a 300kmh speedo. The 930 guards were well installed, its straight, and apart from some minor rust in each door, and one door jam, the shell is good. It was once viper green or similar, no matter. Our painter has had a good look and we are now taking everything off the shell ready for the strip and paint.



My last 911 was this one. 3.4, 46mm PMO's, and built to be a compliant tarmac rally car. Great car, found a good home. Ive wanted to have my mechanic build me a car for a long time as he has a rare level of 911 know-how, and its going to be fun letting him have his head on a ground zero project, rather than reworking someone elses creation. As good as this car was, and it was terrific, it wasnt "ours".

Dont know what these wheels are but they are growing on me. Ive got another set of 17 inch Simmons lightweight 3 piece wheels for track use, refurbished and ready to go. At least we can keep the shell rolling.

Well Project Zero has taken rather a turn. While hunting for a suitable engine, I stumbled on a rally 911 built up in 2011 with all the right bits, but in need of a big clean up. After shipping the car 3,600 kms to WA, it arrived with a thick veneer of Victorian alpine dust. I jumped in and took it for a 15 minute spin to see how it drove. Not a squeek! Couldnt believe how sweetly she ran.
So, the first two days involved tearing it apart. Interior out, glass out, and ready for a wiring tidy up. Over 100 cable ties and at least sixty feet of wiring removed we have the makings of a sound, tidy rally car. Looks like Im still looking for a motor for Project Zero. Ill post some photos under a new thread titled 911 Rally Car

Those look like Fikse wheels to me, if so they most likely were over $4k new...

Thanks for the tip on the wheels. Would they have any identifying marks if they are Fikse's?

If they are Fikse and not knock offs (copys) they will most certainly be stamped. In looking at the inner wheel more closely they look more rounded than my Fikse's were..
