Tips on reinstalling power window motor

I'm following the Pelican article on replacing the power window motor.

Porsche 911 Window Regulator and Motor Replacement | 911 (1965-89) - 930 Turbo (1975-89) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article

I removed the 6 allen bolts (figure 2) they say to remove but I can't move the regulator around like they are doing in the photos. I removed the motor using one of the small holes in the door but reinstalling it that way looks difficult. I can't get the motor bolt holes of the regulator down to the speaker cut out like this:

Are there more parts of the regulator I need to remove? Any tips on general reinstallation? Thanks!

Been there, done that

Been there, done that just a couple of months ago. It's enough to make grown men cry, but it is doable, assuming you have infinite patience and are armed with a substantial vocabulary of four-letter words that you can threaten the regulator with.

As I recall, moving things to and fro can be helped by jockeying the window up and/or down until you hit a location favorable to what you're trying to do. That said, be very careful that you are always in total control of the window position lest it fall to the bottom. When the window position is "there" you can use masking/painter's tape to hold the window to the door.

Good Luck

Its been a while but I think it all becomes more loose when you remove the motor - it's drive gear may be holding things in one position. Maybe have a block of wood handy in case your regulator spring pin is shot so the window doesn't slide down suddenly when you remove the motor, although I think mine had more friction.

Actually, the motor off. I put 12v to it and it ran. :-( After further diagnosis, it was the passenger side switch so I'm trying to reinstall the motor.

I just can't see how to get the regulator down in front of the speaker hole like in the howto article. I think I have to unhook more of the regulator but I'm not sure.

Did this last month.

This is the best piece of advice.

Another tip

Also, I remember reading (can't remember where, but I think it somewhere on this incredible forum) that one or the other of these two arm "groups" (see picture) should be tied tightly together with a tie wrap until everything was lined up, screwed together, and otherwise ready to go. I found this to be an invaluable tip. And I'm sorry I can't remember which group of arms was the target.

Hope this helps
Good Luck

I got everything back in place. It wasn't that hard. Maybe I got lucky. But it's binding somewhere. The window goes down great to the half way point. More research to do....

Good Work!!
Keep at it, constantly remind it who the boss is and it will ultimately submit.
Threats work wonders with mechanical stuff.

Could the binding be a sign that I need a new regulator?

I noticed, as many others have in the past, that the little piece of pot metal holding the spring was broken. (I see in old posts that lots of folks have found this little piece floating around the bottom of the door.) It causes the spring to unwind 1/3 of a turn and thus have less tension.

You can fab your own with a bolt and a few nuts on the other end where the spring retainer was. You will probably need to grind down the bolt head for clearance with the arms.

IMHO, It's unlikely that the binding is caused by loss of the gizmo that is designed to break and fall into the bottom of the door. More likely that something isn't lined up properly
