Did I break it??

I was hooking up my gauge and I think I shorted it out the temp side??? How bad is it? Do I need a rebuild?

I ordered a temp/press gauge from DCautomotive $100. Worked on install.

I had a terrible experience with North Hollywood Speedometer so cant recommend them. Sending it out you will get a like new gauge back but will take several weeks. Buying a used one is easier and faster.

Pro's and cons.

I got one for 40 bucks at Hershey , you have to just not be in a hurry . I don't think its a critical guage for a road car . Just leave it until you get one at a decent price. Don't be rushing to find one this week and pay through the nose.

wait you should be able to just get the module for inside that .. in fact that's not the original module . that's an aftermarket kit put in to show the numbers. you might be able to get that from Pelican.

As mentioned, that temp gauge is not original to the car (I am pretty sure of this). You can remove just that piece of the gauge and replace with a new one from our host. I did this when I went from the "bar" gauge to the numbered temp gauge you have.

Be absolutely sure the sending unit is a match to whatever replacement you purchase or the reading will be meaningless.

It is maddeningly hard to find on Pelican. Look for part number PEL-911-TMP-KT1. Comes with a new temperature sensor. $205.

Send it to North Hollywood. They fixed my speedo. I installed it wrong and fried it. They repaired it again for not a lot more money, and now it works fine.

I believe you must install that temp sender to use that temp delineation. If you just use the gauge unit I believe it will be off with the original sender.
That 120 looks very close to the original 140 degree/ 60 Celsius ....I've always wondered about that specific overlay.

I've one from a different vendor (overlay only) that matches the original side tick mark of 60 C with the 140 temp marking.

This for an 80-83 SC.


That unit covers from 74-89 so that sender has to be coupled with that delineation.

Being in the instrument field, I can't resist jumping into this chain; just because a gauge is functioning doesn't mean that its readings are correct (most older gauges aren't), thus sending it to North Hollywood or Palo Alto for calibration guarantees that the readings will be accurate. The charge for this service is pretty cheap insurance against potential engine damage/failure.
