Starter solinoid help!!
Okay after driving from SF to AZ in one day and battling rain and snow stopped to fill gas and the car wouldn't start up after. My first thought, starter went out.
This had happened on another four hour trip I had done and when I got done filling gas the car wouldn't start. I let it cool down and wallah! started right up. Theory is that the whole thing just expanded from the long a$$ ride and wouldn't turn. That was then this is now. Got the click but 81 SC wouldn't turn over, has a slight back fire when i let off the throttle or coast and i also took apart the solinoid today and put volt meter on it. No Go. Does anyone know if there is a VW crossover # for the solinoid? I have called all around town and only one place has one starter and solinoid for $220 w/ core trade. The starter is fine. Could really use some help here. Another question is any of you AZ guys have a place that you get your parts from? Maybe I am just looking at the wrong places.

Is it a rebuilt starter in there now?
Solenoid is a likely candidate, but that may not be the only reason for that. I once had a rebuilt starter from Bosch and it did that 2 years after it was replaced. It turned out the shaft where the start gear rides on was slightly bent and when it got hot, the start gear would not jump out to engage. Took me years to figure it out. Moral of my story is, byte the bullet and swap out the starter. |

The solinoid wouldn't retract, just buzzed when put voltage to it on the bench.
Nice thought but it was also cold this AM when I went out to start it. HMMMMMMMMMM.............. I just wanted to get a second opinion from some veterans

Hit it with a hammer.
No seriously, tap it with a hammer(carefully) on the solenoid and around the end of the starter. The electricity from the key goes through coil-like windings in the solenoid and pulls the iron shaft to it's center. This pulls on on side of a see-saw which pushes out the drive gear on the starter motor into the flywheel ring gear. It sounds like the whole mechanism is stuck/gummed up and vibration will sometimes losen it up. If it's sat for a while it sometimes happens. Another option is to disassemble, clean, lube and re-install. (edit-I didn't read carefully, You've already done that) Last edited by john70t; 12-22-2002 at 10:22 AM.. |
