CV boots. What is this domed cap for?

I was watching someone do his CV boots on his SC.
He just packed some grease and installed the boot with the greasy end exposed.

He did not have this domed cap in the center of the photo.
What is this cap for? Is it only on some models?

If you have an'86 Carrera as your post states, you have them on your car! The '85 1/2-'86 911s use this cap over the inboard CV instead of a gasket. Makes things much cleaner when doing any CV work. Came about with the change to 108mm CVs and larger axles.

The reason is to keep people from reinstalling a grease-covered CV to the flange covered in grease. --Dry Metal on dry metal Friction, at that interface, helps keep the joint from moving, which helps keep the bolts from backing out.

This was actually on a '78SC, not my car. Thanks for clearing that up!

It was my car, this caused some head scratching for us as the caps were not in the pelican kit but were in some of the tutorials on the interwebs. Drove the car down to Philly this morning with no issues, let the summer begin!

Regards
Dave
