Hi:
On my 84 Careera I replaced the Paris/Rhon altenator with a rebuilt back in June. This past weekend after a about 500 miles of driving I noticed the smell of the battery over cooking. Check the charging rates several times through out the trip and caught the rates up at 16 - 17 volts... The higher rates seem to be higher at idle and about 14.2 at highway speeds. The wife was getting the volt readings through the cigarette lighter while we were driving. Before we drove home this morning I refilled the battery and off we went made it home no problem just smelly at times. The car is now sitting with the battery removed and baking soda all over the front trunk. 2 Questions since this is a recent rebuilt altenator do I just replace the internal Regulator ? With the battery out of the car it read 13.05 volts accros the terminals... Is this battery still any good or is it damaged from over charging ?? ------------------

Joe,
The battery isn't fried, yet ... at least not to the point of buckled, shorted cells! ONLY a bad regulator can cause overcharging and the high Voltage you report ... wife checking Voltage at cig. lighter socket with test probes seems a bit chancey, though! Replace the regulator board. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |
