Post "Euopean Spec"

Is there anything to look out for on a " '84 European Spec 911 that's been stateside since 1985"? What are the differences besides HP?

Thanks

Documentation (EPA, DOT, more?) for when it was federalized. Others who have been through this can provide more details.

Be sure that it comes with 2
documents. One is the DOT form certifying that the car is in compliance with all D.O.T. regs. The other is the EPA waiver or compliance document whichever is appropriate for the car in question. It helps an awful lot if the car has been registered in the states at least once.

The main differences between the NA and ROW beside the much healthier engine are the engine transmission cooler(look on the side of the transmission for a small serpentine cooler loop) and better euro H4 headlamps.

I have an 84 Euro. I don't have much contact wth other 84 owners, so I can't tell you much about it, other than my impression is that it is noticably faster than other 84s. Mine wasn't even advertised as a Euro. PO just passed that info on as I was looking at it. I would be happy to answer any questions about it or compare equipment. It does not have a CAT, it has a pre-muffler and some sort of a sensor instead. I think Warren has mentioned that the Euro premuffler adds power over even a bypass pipe.

The biggest thing I recommend looking at is the exhaust. Make sure the US conversion was done well and with good parts. Other than that, just get the regular PPI. It sits a little lower than US cars too, so check underneath for driveway and curb scrapes. Check the documentation to make sure it's a Euro and see if you can get an explaination for how it got to the US. See if the company that did the importing gave any materials to the initial owner in addition to the usual government approvals. Mine had some of the original advertisements from the importer, which were fun and infomrative if not valuable.

I've had it for almost two years. It has the correct WPOZZZ vin and the wrench confirmed it was a true Euro. Documents that came with the car suggest first owner took a special factory sponsored tour and took factory delivery of a Euro spec car.

I have been considering a newer model, just kind of dreaming. FWIW, what's the going rate for an 84 Euro Cab?

I have a 1983 ROW (rest of the world) 911SC.
I cannot stress enough that you need to get the DOT and EPA documentation to protect yourself. It is illegal in the US to sell a non conforming car to be used on the US streets. If the car was sold to you without being in compliance and you get hurt, your insurance may not cover you and you can sue the PO for selling you an illegal, unsafe car. Needless to say, if YOU sell the car to someone that gets hurt, you may be sued. Besides that enjoy the car. My 83 has higher compression that put it at 204HP. It may be lower, and has the better H4s. It is awesome to drive at a drivers education event. Go find one to really experience what your car is capable of.

I just bought a Euro 84 911 coupe that is about to go under the wrench (part of the negotiations of the sale). It needs a first gear and a top end rebuild. It sits in my garage looking pretty, waiting for my mechanic to fit it into his schedule. It's been sheer torture just looking at it. I'll keep you posted on the outcome of the operation.
