Did some more checking. Foglight switch 914.613.451.10 was used by Porsche through the 1980 model year. It was then switched to the two stage rear window defogger type switch. The picture of the switch on Automobile Atlanta site is not correct. The 914.613.451.10 switch is shown on Weekend Rides web site, the P/N is visible. They have a switch (looks used) for sale $$$. This switch is apparently NLA as replacement from Porsche.

Here are some available locally. Again, single throw.

Just a quick bump on this thread, I’m moving to the UK and trying to get my ‘83 ready for MOT. I love the idea of using a Porsche switch, does the 914.613.451.10 illuminate when pulled? Looks like you mention it briefly but just want to confirm, as that appears to be a requirement over there.

Also, I see you’re at Ramstein (I’m USAF), do you meet TUV with this, or fall under US SOFA/USAEUR inspection rules? I ask cuz I may end up moving down there down the road and would love to not modify it again later.

Shamrok,

All the 914.613.451.10 switches I have seen (including the one in my spare parts box, pictured on page 1 here) are single-throw switches- front or back or both simultaneously. The switch I used 911 613 147 00 does light up when pulled, just like when you use it for the rear defogger.

I didn't realize service members had to go through MOT. Here in Germany it's USAREUR inspection, which is well short of TάV but still no joke. If your car is safe, it'll pass.

There are at least 2 different fog light switches for the 911. No reason to use a rear 2 stage defroster. The two switches are two stage. Pull out to turn on fog lights and turn knob to activate rear fog lights. One is 914 613 451 10 ( I know, a 914 part but it looks and acts exactly like the 911 version. Plus, I just bought one on ebay for $35).The hard part is figuring out what terminal connects to what because there are 4 terminals on it.

N connects to 86 on relay(you should use a relay for front fog lights)
NR connects to rear Fog light (mine are LED so no relay necessary)
- is ground (for little bulb inside the switch)
58 goes to 12 V in fuse box (connect to BOTTOM of fuse box)

On relay 87 connects to fog light, 30 connects to 12V power supply, 85 is ground, and 86 connects to N on fog light switch.

Also, the fog lights should be wired to come on only when the low beams are on.

I installed a 911 switch a while back. I have the correct connections written down if anyone needs them. They may be different than the 914 switch above.I installed it to right of steering wheel because it is almost impossible to install it in the factory location because there is no access to the back of the dashboard without dismantling a huge part of the air duct system in the trunk. I was considering removing the stereo and drilling a 1.5 inch hole in the sheet metal above the radio 4 inches back from dash face.which would allow you to push the switch up behind the dash once the knob was removed. I did a little test hoe which revealed some insulation and another layer of sheet metal. I got nervous and quit. Does anyone know if my idea would work?

Steven,

The reason to use a 2 stage defroster switch is that it is correct for some years, and is available. Installed, it looks identical to the single stage switch the car came with- the knob threads right on.

Is the part you bought different from the one with that part number shown here (from post 2 of this thread)? Because I think these are single-throw switches.

Or this one from post 21?

Please post a picture.
