Just replace outer tie rods?

Picked up a used SC rack that already has turbo tie rods on it that seem fine, but the outer tie rods need to be replaced from when then were removed from the car. Any reason not to just replace the very outer ones?

Perfectly fine to replace just the outer tie rod ends. Make sure get the ends for the Turbo Tie Rods as I think there are different from the standard ones.

I would just replace the outer tie rods.

Surely this is both the tie rod and the track rod end?

We may be getting tripped up on terminology. The picture above is the entire tie rod. I believe the PO is asking if it's OK to replace just the tie rod end, as pictured below. This is certainly acceptable. In my mind, there really isn't an inner and outer tie rod on a 911 per se.

Exactly - I'm going to look for the very "outer".

I agree - back to the old chestnut 'two countries separated by a common language' with a few dodgy German translations thrown in to make it a real muddle.

Porsche call the entire assembly a 'tie rod' in the PET and the end joint a 'ball joint'.

In the UK the Outer joint is most commonly called Track Rod End and the part that bolts to the rack as a tie rod.

I think we use the expression Track Rod End as this is where the tracking (toe) is adjusted.

I guess that in the USA the definitions are more commonly shown on the attached sketch.

^^ Those are the proper ones with the castellated nut and pin. There are others with a simple nylock nut which Porsche did not originally use.
