I used some 1,500 degree auto paint from the local chain auto parts. It requires you to run the parts for about an hour to set the paint. After about 4 months, so far so good. Just be sure to clean any dirt of surface rust off so the paints adhears well to the surface. The engine paint is not rated for the high temps of the exhaust and will burn away.

You can Jet-Hot Coat (I may have that name wrong) the headers. I used the Black Velvet high-temp product made by POR-15 on my stainless steel muffler, and it's held up fine.

Porsche Crest

Sperex VHT is probably the best product on the market ... black is the best color, and looks best even after road dirt has accumulated.

Sandblasting would be the best preparation method, and thorough degreasing is needed to assure good bonding and durability! Curing will happen in normal opertion of the exhaust system.

I used some high heat stove and grill paint from an auto parts store rated for either 1400 or 1800 deg F. With a catalytic conv the paint burned off of the pipe between the muffler and the cat and off of about a quarter of the muffler near the inlet.

Here's what the Jet-Hot Sterling silver finish looks like. Stays that way forever (not forever but a really long time).

I also used the POR-15 high temp stuff on my OE heat exchangers. Takes a long time if you brush it on. The color is factory manifold gray I believe.

Like Warren said, your best bet for longevity is to be sure the stuff is very clean and degreased. A good prep solvent will go a long way towards removing stuff that detergent soap will leave behind.

thanks for the responses I will try the 1500 temp paint and see how it hold up. If it dosen't hold up I will get a new muffler and have them jet hot coated>

Try the brush on stuff from Eastwood. It's made for exhaust systems.

Ive used the silver brush on exh. stuff from Eastwood on my Type 3 VW, it worked great! Heck, I might use it on the Porsche!
Give it a good cleaning first-wire brush, etc. Better yet, sand blast!
