How do I remove the center console controls?
I have a 87 911 Coupe...
I've removed all of the screws that hold the center console, including the screws that hold the controls to the center console, but I can't figure out how to pull the controls (fan, hazard light switch, etc...) out from the center console. Just need to disconnect the wiring/switches, and then I'll reconnect them and let them hang. I'm need to remove the carpeting from underneath the center console. Thanks! |

On my SC you pull the knobs off then unscrew the nut that sits flush with the console face. I think I used a small pair of pliers to do this (carefully). It should be similar on a Carrera I would expect.

I just did this with the Console delete on my '88.
The Climate control knobs, cassette deck and central locking button are all interlocked to each other on plastic 'dove-tail' sliders. To remove them, you'll need to remove the hazard and defrost buttons (which are a spade plug harness on mine) and the front faceplate they are secured by. The front face plate is secured by to plastic tabs at the top portion of the face. You wont be able to remove the entire thing, but enough to access the other stuff. You should then be able to get to the AC knobs to unplug the fan. Unfortunately you cant do the same with the temp knob. There is a metal wire tube that can't be unplugged from the temp knob, so you'll need to unscrew the knob assembly from the housing and fish it out. If you have a central locking button, I couldn't find any way of disconnecting this without cutting the wires and soldering them back to the board they are secured to (Because I never use that button, I opted not to re-install it) The whole process is a pain, and if it's just to redo the carpets and put the console back, I might just try and work around it now that the console is unscrewed. FWIW

OK... I was trying to go off of the Bentley manual, but its not very accurate.
I unplugged the wiring harness for some of the units... except the climate control. the 3 stacks... central locking at bottom, then climate control, then hazard/defrost at top came apart with a gently pry from a flathead screw driver. It seems there is a plastic pin that can only be broken to pop them apart. (Again.. Bentley manual made it seem that there was a screw at the top. This thing is a PITA!!! No wonder some of you just remove it and leave it alone. I plan on installing a WEVO shifter when all is done. |

OK... I finally got it off... I just wasn't sure how hard to pull the climate control knobs off... and then after that, I wasn't sure how to get the washers off that hold the climate controls to the face plate.
Once I did that, I had to trim a larger square hole to finally get the square shaped climate control through it. Now I have to figure out how to get the leather shifter boot off. Looks like its glued to the shifter. |

I removed mine on an 84. I did just roll up the temp wire and tucked it under the passenger foot board just in case someone later wanted to reinstall the a/c controls.

and the boot should slide off towards the top of the shifter. Have a look at the Bentley manual, or pm me. Best, Gerry
