Evren needs help!
Hi Guys, I just got a phone call from Evren. He's having trouble licensing his car. He has bill of sale, & title transfer from the state of Oregon, The VIN # is fine. But he has no engine number, because it's a rebuilt engine with a replacement case. Turkish bureaucrats can't seem to understand that replacement cases are merely a part, and don't carry engine numbers.
Does anyone have an idea on how to get around this problem? Is there anybody at the Porsche factory he could contact who could send documentation that replacement cases don't carry engine numbers? ANY way we could contact somebody "official" in the Porsche organization to help here? All ideas welcome, but please no nasty comments about public officials who try to do a good job as they serve us well...Evren may print this thread out as an aid in solving his problem. Thanks in advance, Paul |

Wonder if we can get a copy of this to Roland or someone else with a factory connection?

In Belgium I used: Bill of Sale, Insurance Policy, Title Transfer, Previous Registration, and Military Orders with a letter from the military showing shipment of the vehicle.

Hey Paulie,
Get him an engine # from a same year car. Have him get a set of those die stamp thingies. Punch the engine # in the side-o-the block. Worth a try, anyway. Mark |

I'm sure Porsche would help, combine that will some sort of notarized letter from the prior owner and perhaps a receipt. Additionally documentation of where the engine number is and an inspection of that location showing unmodified metal may also help.
Might also try local PCA chapters. Porsche Club - UAE P.O. Box 73751, Dubai, United Arab Emirates +971-(0)50-4591355 (Secretary) +971-7-2272012, Email: por_club@emirates.net.ae

Thanks for all the ideas guys...Evren probably asleep right now, haven't heard anything more. We're trying another tack, I think. But, yes, if one ran a kardex on the VIN, got the original engine number, could it be legitimately stamped in? I'm sure it's a replacement case, which means the original case is gone...I just don't know the legalities of this...

I've heard of Bruce Anderson helping people smooth things like this over. All legit things mind you. But helping, as an authority on Porsche's.
I remeber reading years back about how he helped some guy in Cal with registration. The DMV claimed the car was a 67, when it was really a 66. Anyways, good old Bruce did whatever he did and convinced the DMV that it was indeed a 66, and that it was registered as a 67, because that was the first year it was sold. (It was a big deal at the time, because 66 used to be cut-off for smog-exemption.) |

Tell him to stamp the VIN number on the engine. Then there won't be any question as to wheather it belongs with the car.

If he's in Turkey, then any documentation will probably have to be translated by an authorised translator, expensive and time consuming. Get some numbers stamped on the case, that is something they can understand, and it's cheap and quick. Is there an engine number on any of the documentation? If not use the VIN number as Steve suggested.

ok, a couple cartons of smokes and he should be ok.
I have been through this situation with the Turkish Jandarma and they are pretty tough. I know all military people have to have a Beyanamme (spelling?) list, this is like a manifest of all your possessions...and if you have something new and it needs updated, the quickest way is to throw a little extra lira or a carton of smokes. There is also a customs form he can possibly get through the U.S. Embassy that authenticates the cars VIN and engine. When I was at Incirlik, they would actually create a VIN, and stamp/etch, grind it into the motor...it has to have one! Hope he gets through this ok.

If Evren should read this, 1971 911E Coupe engine numbers originally ran from 621001 through 6211767. BTW, both Evren & Ruki are fluent in Turkish...

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your input and suggestions... no progress yet as of Friday evening, but still hoping to get this cleared up through the proper channels before resorting to the tried and true "middle-eastern techniques". Everytime I think Turkey is making progress I get reminded otherwise by something like this. Two steps forward, one step back I suppose. Will post an update when I have any news. |

Those must be very significant sheet metal stampings ... a sign of a long, uphill struggle to get your acquisition recognized & roadworthy in your native country, Evren!!!
Congradulations on winning the battle! May the MFI sing a song of rejoicing across the countryside!

Excellent result, and it only took 3 weeks. That would be a seriously fast result if it had been Spain! Nice number as well.

Cool! Sorry I haven't sent you the radio yet. I forgot. It's in the box ready to ship but it's been sitting in my Jeep under all the junk I seem to accumulate. I'll get Julie to drop it off at the shippers tomorrow. I'll go dig it out now so I don't forget again. glad to see you're legal now.
