Power Windows
Does anyone have a power window motor & the associated regulator, mechanisms lying around that could be weighed?
or maybe someone could post a pic of the layout? esp. interested in early cars with the option but also an SC or Carrera.... |

Well, I am at descision time. Car comes home today from paint and I have a full set of lexan windows to put in (except windshield). I am doing the rear quarters and rear glass for sure but am up in the air about the door windows and front quarter glass......
I may end up pulling the motors and using a strap to pull up/down the windows, if I do, I will gladly weigh all the associated parts that come out of the door. The cool thing about this lexan is that it has a factory looking greenish tint to it!! Cheers

I've got to go out to the coast to fix my dad's 911SC power window. I can weigh the motor, but the regulator and stuff...eek don't wanna pull that unless I have to.
What i do know is that the 1978 motor is huge compared to the motor in my '84. At some point Porsche switched to a much smaller and compact motor. I don't know if the window regulator changed. I think a look at PET would shed some light. I'm still waiting for my cd rom copy of the parts catalog to arrive. At that point I'd be able to look at parts numbers and such. |

I have all fiberglass panels. My doors have no interior panels and are just shells. I run Lexan rear window, quarter windows, and front A pillar windows.
I do not run any side windows. The Lexan is easily scratched and dirtied. It is not good to clean with Windex and is cloudy but the windows I have do not matter. The A pillar windows are fine. The quarters have stickers and auto-x shoe polish number residue and the back window is useless with glare and the roll cage. I would not want Lexan side windows. They would obsure my mirror and visibility, which are vital.

rusnak - any data (& pics) are useful!
folks - there is some new Lexan out that does not scratch easily. Corvette is using it - not sure if Z1 or all of them. If you can find that, you might be home free. |

well this is interesting. I'm finally back home and able to enjoy the wonders of broadband. Scratch my earlier comments regarding part numbers. I think the numbers were just too blurry. Anyhow, these appear to be the supersceded part numbers.

wow, check this out. I decided to go earlier. And there was a power window option in '73! Who would have known? And look how small these motors are!

I'd really like to find someone that has a power widow regulator laying around. Preferably, I'd like to weigh both the early parallel arm style and the later cross arm style. A manual parallel arm regulator weight would be useful, too. I have a manual cross arm regulator that I can weigh.
Anybody? JR |

Bump back to page one, for the weekend crowd. I find it hard to believe that nobody has a window regulator laying around.

An update:
SCOTITUDE has a pair of cross-arm style power window regulators for sale on another thread (from an SC, presumably a 1980 model, see pic below) and was kind enough to weigh a regulator and motor, together. He came up with a weight of 6 lbs. I have weighed a manual version of the cross-arm regulator and found a weight of 3 lbs. 12 oz. The crank handle and hardware weigh another 2 oz. which is probably less than the wiring and switches required for the power windows. So, it looks like changing the power windows out and installing manual ones would save between 4 and 5 pounds, for the pair. It's probably closer to 5, given the wiring, which I may weigh later. I'd be curious now to know the weight of a manual parallel arm regulator, to see if it is any lighter than the later style. JR
