Alarm LED: Where do you flash?
I need to re-site the flashing alarm LED in my '76 Carrera 3. It used to conveniently fit in the unused rear fog light switch hole, alongside the heated rear window switch. As part of my rebuild I have installed rear fog lights so need a new hole.
Does anyone have any recommendations other than take a drill to the dash... Al G |

If you've added power locks, I personally think that the 993 style of the LED in the lock hole on top of the door is nifty...

my clock never worked and didn't want to send out for the $125 repair. so i pulled it, painted it the glass black, removed the "guts", and put the led in the center. kinduv cool - the poor man's R/RS clock delete with some function.

Door lock pins sounds good. Mine flashes at the immobiler key area which isnt very visible. You can get light "strips" which light up kind of like Knight Riders car did (side to side).
They fit above the rear view mirror and the wiring is tucked in the window seal

Mine is over near the keyswitch. I found an area where there was a hole through the dash, but not through the dash vinyl and just poked a hole through the vinyl.

Has anyone figured a way to add a flashing LED to the factory alarm ('80's Carrera)? I've looked over the wiring diagram to see if a relay could be added somewhere, but the on/off key switch in the door just changes resistance, not a true "on/off". I didn't see any opportunity on other outputs either.
Any ideas?

Chris/others:
Will the 993 door pin/LED fit into the stock recepticle on my '86 911? What years were these fitted on 993's? I've been wanting to fit these on my car, and have posted this question in the past, but no confirmation if it'll work. btw, my LED is located on the floor mounted center console just forward of my shifter. not sure if this is an option for 'earlier' cars. Thanks Mike '86 coupe |

Mike,
The door lock knobs with the lighted diode that flashes to indicate that the alarm is activated started in 1989, including the last of the 3.2 cars. As such, I would imagine that actual fitment wouldn't be a problem, although I'm unclear as to what wiring changes would be required to use them on an earlier car. Good luck, Tim |

I have these on my car. it does look cool, and is probably a good deterrent, but I have to tell you, there is a very high-pitched electronic beep as the light flashes. It is very audible, at least to me, and drives me nuts. Therefore, I drive almost exclusively with the doors unlocked, which is probably bad for any number of reasons. I would suggest finding an alternate means.

I told my installer not to drill any holes for the LED (on my '86 Carrera 3.2). He somehow located it in a crevice in the dash on the driver's side, far left, pointing straight up. I could take a pic if you want. I'm happy with it, since it is visible without looking into the cabin.

I don't think I have a separate alarm. When I lock the doors (central locking, no remote) The LEDs flash. If I try to start the car before unlocking it with the key again, the engine doesn't turn over, and the hazards flash. Is there a way to lock without the 'alarm'?
The beeping is LOUD!!! I am not the only person who can hear it!! Or the voices!!

I think the lights in the door locks will flash whenever it's locked, regardless of any alarms. Sounds like your car has the alarm, only with the horns disconnected from it. Mine would do the same thing but each hazard light flash was punctuated with: "PARRRP PARRRP PARRRP!"

Sorry to bring up an old Thread but I have an 89 and... well I have to admit that these lighted lock things are pretty cool. Unfortunately my car has some electrical issues that I am trying to work out. I gather the locks should flash any time the car is locked? The car does appear to have central locking but I only tonight discovered that this was a button LOL. If my car had an alarm would there be any obvious way to tell?
You guys may find it interesting that I do not believe the light is an LED. There are no wires that lead to the light itself! The "beeping" you hear is, I believe, a step up transformer that energizes the coil that goes around the tiny fluorescent. Pretty fancy stuff for a car that doesn't have back-lit gauges! |

Apparently this lock knob may have been something from the 928 series cars. The part number is: 928 637 138 00 01C- Lock Knob With LED.

I also had previously installed a red led for a nitrous system on the opposite side of the speedometer (left), but now it is being used as an indicator for a dash mounted garage door opener button. To me, the Led's look pretty oem and not bad at all because they are placed symetrically and also because they are about the same size (except one is red and one is blue). I could always paint them black or black them out if I wanted a more oem look later and discontinued use of the LEDS. I personally this is a good location because it is highly visible from both sides of the car. Previous to that an alarm installer had installed a LED in the right bottom corner of the blower/vent control panel on the dash. That small led is currently being used as an indicator for my Air/Fuel gauge. I really cant think of anywhere 'aesthetic' to mount a led that would be visible if not on the dash. You could just stick it in the crevice on the top of the dash facing up, or even wedge it between the crack on the top of the steering wheel, but personally I don't think it looks as aesthetic or functional, if the led is not sitting a hole and flush to the surface of a flat area. (I did this on my other car because I was lazy to take apart the dash panels and drill). Another option might be to mount it in the plastic steering wheel cover but I think it is more of a hassle. Drilling the dash seems a lot easier, especially where routing the wiring is concerned since the gauges are more easily removed than the steering wheel cover. I also like the door lock mounting location idea, but probably a little too much work for me to hassle with removing the door panels. Although I too used to cringe at the thought of drilling my car, after 10 years of ownership, I've totally gotten over drilling into the porsche dash because as far as I'm concerned I don't think I am ever going to sell this car so I might as well place the LED where it looks good and where it is functional (form follows function), instead of worrying about why I am drilling into a porsche. IMHO, led's placed strategically on the guage cluster are more functional and look better than when placed anywhere else on the dash, but that is just me. BTW, this new "blue" led on these new car alarms is so bright that at night, it almost lights up the entire car interior when it flashes. I'm not sure if that is a good or a bad thing, but it is "Very" obvious at night (looks like a mini blue strobe light show in the car). In retrospect maybe I should have mounted it above the ignition keyway facing down so as to be less "Bright" at night. The only downside to that is during the day it would not be as visible for someone glancing into the car. Below is a pic of the red LED I previously mounted. ![]() Last edited by 84porsche9113.2; 04-01-2008 at 12:56 PM.. |

Not all of the gauge lenses were glass, some were also made from plastic.
