Air Fuel Mixture Meter - Atlanta

Hi All -

I'm in the north Atlanta area and wanted to see if anyone knew of a place where i could rent an Air Fuel Mixture meter. Or if anyone had one that i could borrow for a small fee

I know Pelican has this one ( PEL-SW85-2437 ) but I want to set the mixture correctly for my 74 CIS without paying $200 for something I may only use once or twice.

Also, I'm wondering if anyone has taken their car to an emissions station and asked to use their meter that they always put in your exhaust pipe to measure CO2 etc.
Seems like that would work.

Thoughts ?
thanks
Kevin

Do you have an OXS sensor bung in your exhaust? If you do I have a wideband meter you can borrow. It's meant to install in the car but I haven't gotten around to that project yet. I've used it with my car and another local Pelican's. If you have a 12V power supply that's all you need.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

Thanks Tim -
No oxygen sensor on my car ... but couldn't i just place the sensor in the exhaust pipe so it reads the exhaust output ?
What does your meter look like ?

You probably don't have a cat either but if it helps I have a cat that has the catalyst removed. It has a bung. Not sure how we could mate it to your exhaust. Doubtful it would work but I though I'd just throw it out as an idea.

This is the sensor (sans plastic cap). It's meant to sit close to perpendicular to the exhaust flow. Don't know if that matters.

Ideally you install it as close to the cylinders as possible.

Do a search here on wideband O2 sesnors. Lots of information here.

I guess another part of this question is .... how are people with earlier 911s accurately seeing what their air / fuel mixture or CO2 output is ?
I want to adjust mine accurately, so that means reading what is coming out of my cars exhaust.
But all the meters i see for sale look like they plug into where the Oxygen sensor is located on the car.
My car has no CAT or oxygen sensors.
HOW are all the early CIS guys correctly adjusting air / fuel mixture ?
Am i missing something ?
thanks
Kevin

Innovate makes an exhaust clamp that is designed to allow you to insert the O2 sensor into the exhaust pipe. I often use one of these with my Innovate LM-1, when testing engines on my engine stand.. You can purchase one of the relatively inexpensive O2 Gauges with sensor and use one of these clamps..it you do not have an O2 bung in the exhaust pipe.

Pelican sells it...follow link above.

regards,
al

Answer: Nobody...mixture is set based on carbon monoxide output or CO, not carbon dioxide.

That clamp may work on a dyno, but the airflow around the exhaust on a moving car dilutes the reading. I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work on my car.

I have a Daytona-Sensors AFR instrument permanently installed in my 2.7 mfi in my 73. It records up to 2 hours of data.....AFR, RPM, and MAP.

Tuning can't be done in 5 minutes.

Gunson gas tester worked for me before I went to EFI and a Wideband.
I have tuned two other local cars recently with mine.
Maybe someone near you has one to loan you, or post up a WTB ad. I bought mine used in the Pelican classifieds, also available new on eBay

Good shops used to have a gas analyzer for checking the CO. Your best bet would be to find a shop that still uses one and have them set the mixture. Probably less labor charge than an oil change.

You won't find one you can rent and you won't know how to run it, either. Some of these won't give you good results if it's used incorrectly.

You could weld bungs into the heat exchangers on both sides, buy the O2 sensors and other crap to read the mixture but why spend hundreds of dollars on something you only need to do once in a blue moon, as opposed to just paying a few bucks every few years to have it done for you?
