Help needed removing the shifter pivot cage

Howdy guys,

I can't seem to be able to remove this Allen bolt to free the pivot cage. Am I missing something? I tried heating it up and torquing pretty hard without success. Any ideas?

Yeah I broke my tower trying to get it loose.

be careful.

I find it easier to loosen the lock nut with the tower still attached to the car, then the bolt just turns out freely.

repeated liquid wrench and tighten it then more lubricant and keep at it .....carefully.

Soaking overnight. Let's hope it loosened up.

Thanks all,

Alex

Put it back in the car so you can get some leverage on the large nut. Also worth noting that in my first go at this job I messed up the threaded pin and found out it's virtually impossible to find a replacement on its own. A pelican came to the rescue with a complete shifter assembly.

^^^^
This!

It's a lock nut doing exactly it's job.:D

I tried clamping the tower down after a night of soaking in penetrant. No luck. How much can I heat this part? Is it possible to overheat it with a blow torch?

Also, I don't have to unscrew the brass nut right? It only acts as a "depth locker" for the Allen bolt right? The way the threads go, I don't see the brass nut impede the release of the black Allen bolt. Having said that, I've been known to be wrong!

Thanks,

Alex

Wrong.
undo the "Brass" nut first. It's what's locking the screw in.

The allen bolt is theaded into the housing. and the Nut is trying to pull the tread out of the housing and s such putting pressure on the allen bolt and 'Locking' it into position.

Undo the nut first while holding the allen bolt still with an allen key

Ok, thanks. Having said that, I tried the nut, it doesn't budge. I'll try more penetrant. Thanks guys.

psychoideas 01-06-2017 04:52 PM

Yes it's a pain. there's no room to get a socket or ring spanner in there. just have to use a good open ender with brute force while holding the housing. I remember mine was tight.

Before you waste anymore of your time, why not bolt the base back into the car and unbolt the lock nut with a socket. It will make your life easy. No chemicals, no flames and no frustration.

22mm 1/2inch drive fits perfectly.

I'm on it!

Alex599 01-06-2017 05:23 PM

I assumed a socket wouldn't fit in there.

Alex's learnt lesson of the day: Never assume!

I did, thanks. I clamped the tower to my workbench and used a 22 mill socket and barker bar.

psychoideas 01-06-2017 11:15 PM

Awesome!
What are you doing? a refurb or wevo type replacement?
