The minimum standard for 5.1 is higher than the minimun for 4 but that doesn't mean that 5.1 is always better

DOT 4 and 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids they are compatible with each other, which means they can be readily mixed without harming your brake system. It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid.

here are some top fluid rated by wet boiling point

Excellent overview by Bill.

I can add my 0.2 in the form of the following summary table which I used to shortlist my brake fluid choices:

FWIW.......I tracked my 930 and the combination of Castrol SRF + Pagid Orange RS4-4 gave me solid and reliable brakes on the track.

Many motorcycle shops carry HD brake fluids. For example, my local shop has Motul RB600.

I wouldn't worry too much about high temperatures on the street. You're probably below 500-degree. The average street pad gives out at about 650 degrees. That's about the same point what the race pads just start to work properly.

If you're really worried about temperatures get a scan gun and check your temperatures.

You should change your fluid every two years. That's more important than the brand of fluid. For the street I pay more attention to the wet number than the dry number.

Costa P - How hot were the brakes on your track car? My rotor temps at Sebring get to about 1100º.

Hi Richard. I have never measured the temps so I can't say how hot they got. But this combination of brake fluid and pads transformed my brakes to a level which provided me with total confidence. Fair enough my 930 was stock at the time and I'm hardly a "pro" driver, but I could do the full 20min practice sessions at Kyalami and never once sensed any degradation.

When I bought the car, it had OE pads and unknown brake fluid. The brake pedal got "mushy" on my first track day (Zwartkops raceway)!

I should add, that I have also removed the fog lights to help with airflow. Never got around to adding ducting though. That is still on the to-do list!
