Auto Heat Footwell Blowers

I am terrible with car electronics and was hoping you guys could help me get my footwell blowers to work. I believe everything is functioning as it should besides the footwell blowers not turning on. I've read a bunch of threads on footwell blower issues, but I am stuck.

Engine blower was replaced as the old one was seized and started smoking when I initially replaced the fuse in the engine compartment.

When engine blower turns on I get 12.3V at the footwell blower connector at drivers side, but only if the passenger side blower is disconnected. Once I plug the passenger side blower I only get 1.5V. Either way the footwell blowers wont turn on.

Initially I found that both 10A fuses at the footwell blower were bad. When I turn the auto heat dial all the way up to the red defrost setting the fuses blow.

I've taken apart the drivers side blower motor, but have yet to lubricate it. Is it possible it is so seized up that it wont run? I plan on buying some dry lube tomorrow to lubricate the motor. Or should I take it to an electronic shop to have them replace the bushings and test the motors?

Yes, it's very possible that the motors are stuck and causing the fuses to blow. Mine were so badly corroded they were essentially bricks. Before starting to chase electrical gremlins, you definitely want to make sure the footwell blowers are free spinning. You should be able to remove the assembly, reach in and turn the squirrel cage easily with one finger.

If they spin freely, try powering them directly from a 12 volt source to see if they work individually.

Thanks Gerry, I did find this thread and used it to take apart and lube the motor.

Update: So, the lube did help. But, the fan will only come on by itself at settings 8, 9, and max (defrost). To make it spin at the lower settings I have to manually start it by hand.

Looks like I need to either get new motors or have these rebuilt? Is it possible to get these rebuilt? What kind of shop would be my best bet?

Well, I have been "Hounding" Pelican for at least three years to provide us
the motor without the housing to no avail.

Here are several additional threads which discuss modifying an
evaporator motor to fit in the foot well blower motor.

I have not tried this.

Please help me spec alternate footwell blower motor

Replacement footwell blower motor solution

Help! Does anyone understand the footwell blower circuit?

Thanks for your help! I ordered (2) Bosch 0130007081 motors. Seemed like the work to adapt these was minimal and easy.

Great.

Those may spin at a higher rpm than the originals.

Let's see some before & after pics.

did you remove the brushes and clean the contacts on the rotor.

see my thread in the 930 section on autoheat.
remove the brushes and put some 600 sandpaper in there and clean the crud off the contact.
one of mine was pretty bad and now works great.

if the fans don't blow on lower settings it could be the switches in the autoheat or the resistor unit on the passengers side.

The fans do blow on the lower settings, but only if I "jump start" it manually by turning the motor. There is too much resistance, so I will try your sandpaper suggestion.

Thanks!
