911 SC headlight problem

I was driving home today and both my headlights went out - both high and low beams. This happened when I driving with my low beams on and tried to place my lights on high beams.

When I pushed the turn signal stalk switch it seemed to resist at first, but then kind of 'popped' and went into what felt like a 'normal' mode with proper spring loaded resistance when flashing the high beams. However, now I have no high nor low beams.

I can still hear the relay(s) clicking when I go to flash the lights with the key on. However, there are no lights.

I checked the fuses and they are fine.

Any suggestions? Any way to rule in or rule out the turn signal stalk mechanism? Thanks.

My almost new stalk (within a year of replacing it) started to chatter on turns causing the hi beams to come on by themselves and then one day I had the same thing as you.
No high or low beams. Apparently the stalk managed to have both hi and low on at once burning out both H4 lamps. I have the relays installed as well.
I bent the contacts in the turn signals as per the instructions in the thread about the fix and replaced the lamps and have been trouble free since.

Thanks for the input, and I will check these out tonight.

The difference in my situation, though, is that I do not have ANY headlights right now - neither high beams nor low beams. Most of the posts in those threads were complaining their high beams were coming on too frequently. I wonder if my center post broke off completely and I have no power available for either circuit?

Check your headlight filaments. As I mentioned, for whatever reason they both burned out at exact the same time on my car.
Probably from both hi and lo beams being on at the same time.

im sure your high beam /low beam switch melted .. see any smoke when this happened ?

+1 for installing headlight relays. I put in JWest's prewired setup. Very nice and easy to put in. I look at it as insurance against smoke getting out of the dimmer switch.

Pull the headlight connector and test the voltaqe with the switch on. No power there means work back to the fuse panel, relays and dimmer switch, in that order. This will eliminate headlight burnout as the issue as mentioned by Timmy2. Since you hear the headlight relays clicking everything may be OK up to that point in the circuit.

+2 for the JWest Relay. Easy install with clear instructions. Superior performance with the added benefit of not running lots of current through the high beam/turn signal stalk.

Do this before anything else. Find out if it's the turn signal switch or the headlight switch. (You will need ignition on) it's mostly likely one of these two.

Both of mine went out and it ended up being the $200 headlight switch instead of just hi beams like those with messed up turn signal switches.

Perhaps a bad ground? Lights do odd things when the grounds are bad. I had brake lights flashing instead of the turn signals and lights being too dim.

I have 1985 911 targa just put motor back in head lights only come on when I have my turning signal on. do I need to replace my turning controls ? any advice anybody?
