I was just reading through this ultimate RUF thread and must say its awesome.

I have just bought a pair of RUF bumpers and would be greatful if anyone who has gone through the fitting process could share a few tips. I particulary what to find out:

- what nerf bars to use front and back,
- who supplies the best nerf bars;
- where are the bumper fixing points and do they attach to the nerf bars;
- how best to fill the gaps between the bumpers and the body panels.

Many thanks guys

Pete

Any advicxe much appreciated.

Pete

Pete, here you go:
- what nerf bars to use front and back & - who supplies the best nerf bars;
I did not use any nerf bars, it works perfect w/o any.
- where are the bumper fixing points and do they attach to the nerf bars;
The ruf bumpers are bolted right underneath the fenders (front and rear bumpers) and are also bolted under the rear reflector and front hood right to the body.
- how best to fill the gaps between the bumpers and the body panels.
front: the 964 smile (seal)
rear: original body seals are fine

a real simple method on the nerf bars is to remove bumper shocks or even use them. if you want to retain bumper shock, cut head off and then weld some chrome moly from bumper shock to bumper shock. or remove bumper shock and build squared off hoop for yer nerf bars.

in the event of a low speed crash it can help alot. dont expect any miracles probably above 15-20 mph. but it is better than nothing and they do add rigidity.

On mine I used stock non hydraulic(RoW) bumper mounts, back ones are used in front and the front ones were cut down and used in back to mount the nerf bars. I think it's a good idea to use them to shunt a frontal impact into the area designed for that purpose.

My oil cooler is hung from the front nerf bar. It's a regular B&B valance mount, fits perfectly

if i had to do it again, i would mount one probably both hella fogs in the rear bumper. much cleaner, lots of room, easier to clean valance. the rear fog as we did it just seems to be sticking out in space by itself tempting fate to be crushed into lil itty bitty expensive pieces.

dont ferget insulation matting for your rear bumper inside to avoid bubbling yer paint from exhaust temps.

Do an advanced search for "nerf" with Bill Verburg's name and you'll find some good pics of oil coolers and talk of the nerf bars.

Unfortunately I did this back befor digital cameras and haven't had to remove it since, so no pics.

I used the normal B&B valance mount cooler PEL-BBKT3

Rob Fussi did a similar write up on his install using the larger B&B

The small has worked well on mine w/ up to a 3.8 but for lots of track days in hot weather the biggger one is better.

The only isue is that I ordered mine w/ angled I/O, I think that the straight I/O is easier to connect.

This has been really helpfull;. Thank you to all.

I've now received my RUF bumpers. I bought second hand so have a few fibreglass repairs to do to get them into top shap before fitting.

From the advice here, I've decided to go with a front smile from a 964, but fo the back I'm not sure what to use. With the bellows removed there will be a gap with no rubber gasket. Is there anything people have used that they can recommend here? Is there anything from a 964 that would fit?

You can use some '76-80 930 bumper welting, Porsche part # 999 911 205 40. Comes in 5m rolls, which is enough to do both ends of the car. I think Pelican still carries it.

since changed my exhaust to dual's, i have noticed various exit strategies for the exhaust tips.

i have already added mucho heat blanket material into RUF bumper to avoid paint damage. but what i have noticed in all the pics is a variance in length of exhaust pipes.

has anyone done any damage or discoloration on their RUF rear bumper valance from super heated exhaust marring valance, by cutting tips TOO SHORT?????

is there a certain length that allows no soot,discoloration to fiberglass area?

Thanks for the advice on welting roll. Will order that ASAP. I was also planning on using heat reflecting material to help avoid discolouration of the Fibreglass. I am also going to include an aluminium under bumper bar, which must help a little with absorbing the heat.

How does the 964 smile attach to the bumper or chassis along the leading edge of the hood? Guys ask me if the hood goes under the lip in the seal and I tell them no. But I haven't received my front bumper yet to see how the seal attaches correctly. With no bumper or valance in place (front end is bare from the fenders down) I laid the seal around the perimeter of the fenders and hood. It fits perfectly along the fenders but I can't visualize how the 964 smile will lay on the bumper and meet the hood.

Thanks!

Along the leading edge of the hood I attached mine with some screws on the back edge of the smile. With the hood closed you can't see the screws.

You can see them in this pic:

That's what I thought, but wasn't sure since the 74-89 911 smile attaches to the tub and fenders. So I wanted to make sure for this installation we're attaching the smile to the bumper.

Thanks for the picture Scott.

You can see them in this pic:

Scott, how does the hood close against the 964 smile? Does it pin the lip down on the smile? Or does the hood tuck down behind the lip on the smile? Or does the hood butt to the lip?

Did you have any problems with the hood closing correctly, as a result of the screw heads sitting up too high?
