A small chunk out of the windshield!
I noticed a small (5-7mm diameter) chunk missing on the front winshield today. No spidering (yet).
Total bummer, just finished up with the paint work a few weeks ago and then notice this. Question: Does that Novus glass repair work or should I just take the plunge and get a new window? What I am I looking at $$ for a new windshield? Thanks from a frigidly cold Buckeye Pelicanite, |

windshield, if you have full coverage then you'll pay the deductable. I had one place quote $650 and the dealer wanted about $900-1000

Todd,
I've had the glass repair thing done on a couple of cars. It's hit or miss whether acceptable or not. Even on a good repair, I was able to tell where it was. I think the quality of the repair depends on the experience of the tech, where on the windsheild the chip is, and if there is any dirt in the chip. As nice as your car is, you may not be satisfied with a repair. Good luck, Mark |

Safelite is about $150. It's not OEM, but I go through windshields pretty regularly.

Tod,
If Safelite operates in your area, give them a try. Their price for Securit OEM glass was $456. From what Jack says, they also have domestic glass for a lot less. My insurance has a glass deal that replaced the windshield for a $100 deductible - no questions asked.

Jack, you also go through car parts other than windshields at times

If your '84 Targa has the antenna integrated into the windshield and you want to preserve that feature plan on spending alot more than $150. When I did my '85 windshield the only option was an OE replacement and a friend in the business received a very small discount on it. If I recall correctly it was in the $700-$800 range. Personally my windshield antenna works so poorly that I'd consider doing without it.

I've a decent repair in my windshield, and with the in-glass antenna and price of OEM glass it looks fantastic. Yes I can see it, but if I had to replace glass every time I got a chip I'd be more broke than I already am!
For those who care, there's a thread on the merits of Safelite and others on a Land Cruiser forum here: http://www.sor.com/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=000458 Cheers!

Eh, maybe that tread was more OT than on. The meat was this:
posted December 29, 2002 08:40 PM ___ __ _ __ _ _ __ [From] the auto collision end fo this discussion there are a few things I would avoid. Any nimrod glass shop who offers to reduce your insurance deductible or give you free dinners avoid. they use ****e glass and then will over bill your insuarnce carrier. stick to either the oem glass or a good aftermarket brand, Pilkington is a good outfit. If you have an Abra auto glass locally you can request what type of glass you would like them to use. two outfits I would avoid like the plague ar safelite and diamond glass. Not sure if diamond is a salt lake city local but if it is national avoid them. Dave Posts: 144 _|_ IP: Logged RETREVR Member Member # 1080 posted December 30, 2002 08:11 PM ___ __ __ __ __ _ _ __ I have had over 100 windsheilds replaced in the last few years. Many of the big outfits have glass made to their specs(low quality). Some of the shops talk about how they don't use the junk [Chinese] glass. I don't know how to tell the quality. I do know that [OEM] glass will likely cost you a lot more. In Colorado you buy the cheap stuff. I big rock on I25 is going to break the glass no matter the quality.

Embs,
I don't know about your's but my 84' Targa has the heated windshield and no antenna. (didn't think them came with that in 84' ???) If so your looking at the higher end of the spectrum $600 to $900, I can't remember but I have it at home as mine was replaced about a year or so ago. Dan O |

Embs,
I live on the Front Range in Colorado, where broken wiondsheilds are an everyday occurance for some reason. I had NOVUS replace 3 small rock chips in my 86, and the tech who was really nice said that the windshield had about had it. It has gotten brittle with age, and if yours is the same, I am guessing it is like mine. I do have the antenna built into mine, so if I rememebr right the quote was somkewhere near the $500-$700 range to get it fixed. I can still barley see where the chips were, but since my cab is nto a concours car, but a driver, ti does nto really bother me too much... Insurance varies by state, I have a $250 deductible here in COlorado, but when I was in Minnesota there was no deductible it all, the insurance company paid for the whole thing. The insurance company did pay for my repairs at NOVUS though here, strange.... Bill |
