This is a very common and well known problem on US 993 from '96 on. If its not taken care of OBDII will make your life miserable. The estimate sounds high though try a reputable independant.

Bill, can you not ignore it? It only effects air injection at startup, no?

John, that is correct, the electric pump only works for a few seconds at startup, but it throws fault codes. OBDII can be very obstinate and annoying in this regard. I don't know if you can ignore the check engine or not. It would drive me up a wall. I really don't know if there are any other consequences, every one I have talked to has had it taken care of PIA

Could someone like Cyntex make a you a chip that ignored that?

Chips are readily available for the 55 pin OBDI chips but there are few options forthe OBDII. If that was the route you wanted to explore, Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems would be the man to talk to.
I just realized that everybody has had it taken care of under the extended emissions warranty mandated by Unka Sam. You might try that tack with you dealer.

Here is a diagram of the 95-98 993 secondary air injection system
![]() #3 is the left and #12 is the right air tube. I don't see any sensors but I'll keep looking. It was suggested that the error code is from insufficient air flowing though those tubes. Perhaps they can be disconnected and allowed to vent to atmosphere? The only effect should be increased emissions on cold starts.
