Molykote Substitute and Temp Sensor Tool

Changing out the Temp Sensor on an '84 Carrera. Bentley manual calls for Molykote on the threads. Is Permatex Aluminum Anti-Seize an acceptable substitute?

Also, this special Porsche tool is listed as necessary to install. I was able to remove the sensor by cutting the wire and then using a closed end 13mm wrench. The replacement sensory looks to be 14mm, but I obviously can't cut the new wire. Open ended wrench is too big. Do most people simply cut a slit in a cheap closed end wrench to tighten?

I used a pair of needle nosed pliers- not elegant, but sensor's still doing its job 20 years out

Or, get a grinder and slit a socket yourself (that's what I did).

I don't think the Permatex Aluminum Anti-Seize would be a good substitute since the Molykote HTP paste is zinc based.

Molykote HTP MSDS, see page 7

The Loctite Zinc Anti-Seize would be a better substitute.

There has got to be something acceptable that doesn't cost $50/can for one time use.

Lol

After spending an hour grinding a deep socket perfectly it still didn't work because of the stiff insulation near the sensor. Basically wasn't deep enough. Cut a slit in a cheap closed end of the appropriate wrench like you mentioned. Easy peasy.

Complete

The Bosch replacement sensor had Molykote already on it inside the plastic cap covering the threads. Problem solved.

And sometimes Harbor Freight is the answer. This modified wrench made quick work of it.
