Bummer, SC's do rust....

Went to EPR Collision in Camarillo today to visit my SC. Still in pieces, kinda felt ill when I saw her there naked. Then I saw the rust and almost lost it. There is a pretty crunchy rust spot where the front fender meets the cowl. It appears that water can easily run down there and pool. The technician says he'll take care if it the proper way.

Is this a common spot for rust? I seems like a pretty structural area, should I be concerned?

Hopefully the transformation and repair will be done in a couple of weeks.

Have a good weekend all.....

A couple weeks? I hope so, that's all the time you have to SBR1. I'm planning on coming up. Paul (pbs911) is planning his engine drop that weekend but I was hoping to convince him to give her one last run and pull the engine on Sunday.

Don't scare a bunch of rust free SCWDP guys now! Next thing you know we'll all be pulling our fenders off looking for rust. I just got her back together! I'm going to file this w/ the killer bees scare for now. Leland, I hope you’re checking the legitimacy of this threat.

I sure hope it's an easily repairable isolated incident. Were you able to do the modifications you wanted to do while it’s in there?

Ryan, it looks pretty easily repaired. I was more surprised than anything, yet concerned about the location of the rust. The technician indicated that the fender seal at the cowl lets water drain thru the area.

Below is a pic of the valance I am going with. This keeps the stock bumper. I am also getting the Carrera fogs and have a ducktail being delivered to Kevin at AIR of Black Beauty II fame. I am debating a Sport muffler as well. This combo is not the most traditional, but I like it

See ya soon.

Unhappy Yep - same as mine

In my teardown of my 78SC, I found left front fender corrosion - caught it just in time! Water has apparently run down the seam between the fender and the chassis (top lip, just inside the hood) and "thinned" the lip that bolts to the chassis. Bead blast got rid of it, and it's noticeably thinner in a section of about 4", but that's all.
Also found surface corrosion that formed when dirt gathered behind the "junk" (washer fluid tank, hose, fuel overflow, etc) that runs down the inside of the bolted edge of the LF fender.

It's all gone now, and bead blasting progresses on the chassis....I'll know in a few weeks, how much work I've got ahead of me....but it looks "doable" at this point!

Hey guys:

I want to make sure I understand the area you are speaking about since I may have the same problem.

Do you mean the rearmost top area of the left fender, just at the gas lid and extending to just below the window, leftside?

I have very, very small pimples you can only see if you refract the light to your eye. This is something I have scheduled for Spring/Summer repair work.

John

Jdub, that sounds like the same area...my rust is on the passenger side. Guess I should have the shop pull the driver side fender as well and check it out.

Noah, thanks for confirming this. Certainly don't want folks to freak, but it seems a periodic check may be the call.

I will post some pictures of the rusted areas on my 80SC Targa later on tonight. When I pulled the left side fender I was amazed at the amount of mud and road dirt was stuck between the body and air conditioning lines right around where the headlight bucket would be. There is a bracket for holding the window washer fluid botle and another bottle that is in volved with the gas tank. The bracket makes a small shelf area where wet dirt can build up. My car is rusty in that area.

Like we need to loose weight to keep up, ha.

Have you had your fenders off lately?

'81 and later cars don't seem to have the amount of problems that '80 and earlier cars do. I think that this is because of an improvement in undercoating material around '81. With the older PVC stuff, you have to clean and inspect the undercarriage every year or two. The inspection needs to include poking at the undercoating, and removing it wherever it is loose. You will find plenty of spots on most cars from the era.

I would like to see photos of where you found rust.

Looks like fairly typical, not-a-big-deal rust, for a galvanized body car. I would check your door latch panels and sill area (inside the rear wheel wells, just behind the door latch panels) very carefully. Rust can get started, especially at the top and bottom of the latch panel, and in the sandwich that holds the captive nuts for the latch itself. It looks like you've got quite a project going there!

the rusty bit on the Left front fender near Light bucket - I'm repairing the exactly the same bit just now - only way to do a good repair is to remove the bumper mounting bracket - very easy to do - approx 20 spot welds to remove. I will enclose some photos later
