I am in the matket for an early 911 and looking at a 72 which I would like to buy. The owner does not have a COA but says the car us matching numbers. Can any of you guys verify the vin + engine nr and tell me if they are matching?
Vin: 9112100509 Engine: 612 0904 Thanks, |

IMHO a matching numbers car has both the original engine and the original transaxle. Here in the UK we can get a Certificate of Authenticity which will show original engine and transaxle numbers. My car, a 1978 SC, has the original engine but the sportomatic transmission has been replaced by a 5 speed transaxle of the correct year as it happens. Had I known that it had been a sportomatic I may not have bought it, but it was only after a number of years I discovered it had been converted. So I regard my car as not matching numbers. Maybe it's a matching number car?. I still love it and will never sell it; I've had it for more than 23 years.

Matching numbers can mean a lot of things to different people.
It often includes things such as coils, fuel pumps and anything else that has a number on it. ![]() Fuel Pump Number and Dating Code Richard Newton Useless Car Tech Stuff |

The engine # is very close to what it should be for the VIN, so in my opinion it is highly likely that it is the original for the car.

Common understanding of matching numbers is the car still has the engine and the tranny it was delivered with from the factory. You cannot tell for sure unless you have the COA, which is expensive and often full of mistakes, or the Kardex, which IMHO is only available for cars until model year 69/70. But if engine and tranny are period correct and the car runs well, who cares?

Thanks people for your replies. I am in process of buying the 72 and the seller does not have the COA. Getting the COA takes 4-6 weeks and I would not like to wait that long.

What Matt said.
The value difference between a numbers matching car and a non matching car is significant (I don't know the percent - anyone willing to post an estimate??). You may try calling the PCNA and seeing if they will confirm it over the phone or quicker than the 4 -6 weeks for a COA to show up in the mail. Let us know how it turns out.

In the past PCNA has been known to answer yes or no when presented with both the vin and engine number. But don't expect an options list.

I know this is digging up an old thread. I downloaded the latest official COA request form via Porsche Club of America from the link provided above and the process is now called Porsche Production Specifications (PPS).
The very first section states..."Engine and transmission serial numbers are no longer included in the Porsche Productions Specifications documentation. Only vehicles manufactured for sale in the US or Canada are eligible for North American specifications. Porsche does not ship this document outside of the US and Canada. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery." This is interesting based on the comments regarding cars being worth more or less based on whether they have matching numbers or not. |

They have been changing the rules for the certificates over the last few years. Supposedly they were concerned that an unscrupulous owner could forge the numbers onto a motor or gearbox to make it appear that a car had matching numbers, when it really didn't.
I think there was a brief time where you requested the COA and provided your engine and gearbox numbers, and they told you if they were correct. Now you have to take the car to a dealer for an inspection before they will verify the matching numbers, and it costs $400-$500. Mark

In addition to providing Kardex, can also get the data to make up a pseudo-CoA type of Report. Quite popular now.
