Need help, where to start first

Hey guys, i have called a few folks that sell Porsche sheet metal to find out exactly what to replace first on this project.

I've enclosed a link to my one drive account that has pics and a video, the right side is worse than the left. I've budgeted 2.5k a month to doing this, just really dont know what to buy first to get started.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

start with calling a few junk yards or scrap yards and see if they have any donor cars available.
Sometimes they get a totaled 911 of the same model as yours that you can purchase and cut out the good parts.
Also... it looks like you have a lot of rust that could cause issues with the frame. So any cutting and replacing will need to be done with the frame centered and held still.

Start working on only the front (or rear) and move yourself along the entire car... DON'T look at the entire car as one whole project, but at each section as one whole project.

Sorry... I should probably say... the FIRST thing you should do is have someone sand/media blast it or acid dip the entire body so you can get to the clean metal.

Based on your pics... you'll spend too much effort determining what is rusted through and what is just surface rust.
Get it sandblasted or dipped first.

You have yourself quite a project there! Not for the faint of heart. Are you thinking of documenting your progress in this or the body work forum?

I agree with Rokemester and trakrat. You have your work cut out for you. Follow Trakrat's advice and have the car dipped first. once you get it back, you will see all your corrosion issues. a job this complex should be completed on a bench system with dedicated fixtures. Celette or Blackhawk.

a donor car would be a good choice for the rear package tray and rear seat area. Our host and few other vendors have aftermarket replacement sheet metal.

10 years ago, I would have scrapped it. But with the market these days for early cars, I am fixing cars nearly as bad.

Well shoot maybe im an optimist, but i dont think its that bad.
Maybe I'm crazy, my wife thinks so

we are going to wet blast it, i was going to buy all new sheet metal from pelican or RD. I'm allocating funds every month to buy sheet metal and whatnot. I basically got the car for free from a good friend, it does have some sentimental value. This is the first Porsche i have owned, but my first love was a Volkswagen Ghia

great advice already given, for sure need strip (media or wet blast); unfortunately it is always worse than first look, will all be divulged once stripped

-no you are not crazy, car is saveable, just work in small areas knocking out teh punch list one area at a time

-make a list and check off the items, it is a mental boost when you think the project is becoming an insurmountable task

-good luck and keep sharing the progress

Hope you are a good welder and have all the right metal working tools, starting with a good welder. Also be prepared to fabricate some parts, which includes tweaking the parts you buy to make them fit.
Start by reading thru as many posts as possible on this subject here and on the Early S Registry.

Workky, I don't want to be a downer, but this is pretty bad. It almost looks like a flood car. You may want to familiarize yourself with some body measurements and verify the tub is still within spec. Once that is confirmed I would weld in some 1" square tube bracing, because that car is going to move once you start blasting it and cutting out all the cancer. Maybe the Octorisserie will support it, assuming it stays mounted to it. But if you made that, your already handy with a welder, so putting in some cross brace support wont be a big deal.

It can be done, but get ready for some surprises. Suggestions? Tell your wife how beautiful she is, everyday - starting now. ; )

P.S. I dig the pic of the P-51.

Shoot, I forgot about the 51. They were firing it up after replacing the engine. I do plan on building some supports and welding them in before I cut anything out

And if you haven't already, I would check out Fellow Pelican "Fixer's" build thread (below). You'll be facing some similar work. And now that I think about it, I would send him a PM and ask him for some tips. Finally, I would suggest that you upload those pictures from that hosting to site to this thread here on Pelican instead. In my experience, a lot of possible contributors/supporters of yours on this project can't or won't navigate to that link. Good luck!

That picture and video was not meant to be seen by anyone, now my secret is out.

I assure you i cant afford a P-51, maybe a little Cessna 177B. However, the fun for me is actually doing the work, I have no interest in sending it out.
