A few simple tech questions asked

Well setting off to get ol fatnwide ( A 1979 3.0 ) back on the road for the first time in many years so starting with an oil change ….

First photo is from my aluminum sump which I bought from some outfit out of Excellence back around 2000 or so ( can't remember from who ) … anyways, can anyone I.D. this sump and it's plug and metal gasket and let me know where I most likely can get a new metal gasket for it … the other plug on the left is off the oil tank and does not have a metal or rubber gasket and never leaks but should this have a gasket as well ?? … in short I would like to minimize any parts safaris's or arts n crafts time to recreate the wheel so to speak … in tracking down another

Next photo(s) shows what I believe was once something having to function as a gas fume smog plastic canister ?? or … there are 2 braided hoses coming in from the bulk head in the back of this plastic canister as can be seen in the last bottom photo, and another port coming out in front side of canister but as pictured has no hose attached as can be seen just behind the oil fill tube/cap. Think I (yellow) capped off where that tube would go years ago. So if this front port on the black canister tank is left open is this going to create a vacuum leak … as quite frankly I can't recall if that forward canister port had a tube attached to it or not or if it did where the tube ran to … could of run to the yellow cap at the base of the oil filler tube ? … If not where should that canister tube be running to ? … the second to the last photo clearly shows the tank tube port but with no hose attached ….. Dave

Your sump uses the same plug as your oil tank, doesn't it? Easy to purchase an aluminum crush washer of the proper ID, which you can just measure. And you can, in a pinch, just order it from Porsche. Probably Pelican sells them.

The oil tank should have a washer, though good on you if yours, which didn't have one, didn't leak. That's all that counts.

Don't know about the hoses and canisters, but a parts book should help you figure this out. You can download the parts manuals for our older Porsches from Porsche, Every do it yourselfer should do that.

Here's what I found from a bit of research.

The port you show on the canister used to have a hose connected that ran to the engine shroud. This hose provided air to push the fumes through the canister into the air intake. In 1978, however, the system was changed and that single port was no longer used. It appears that the vacuum from the intake was enough to clear the fumes from the canister. The port, however, should probably be plugged. It will not cause an air leak in your system as the plumbing terminates in the air box, ahead of the metering system.

Here's a diagram of the 1977 and earlier set up. Notice the hose connection (#5) to the engine shroud.

… thank you Walt and L.J. for your input and wise counsel … yeah I have measured it, but before going on a parts safari just thought I'd ask for a quick simple minded direct route to it… as far as the canister don't really know what it's for or function even after having porches for over 3 decades and a couple 2 or 3 shelves full of manuals and tech bulletins … however with that said, in particular this CIS model both Bentley and the 101 Up fix in da porsche manuals in particular from what I could see do not address this canister either as I can tell … L.J. … thanks for the diagram… where did you find the diagram ? … please don't tell me it's in the Bentley :,)…. Dave

Found the diagram here, on Pelican, in a thread about the canister. Here's the link to the thread.

Fuel Tank Ventilation

As far as the yellow cap on the tank. From what I've been able to find, it's a connection to a PCV valve that would have been plumbed into the system. Others have removed it and simply plugged the opening, as is done on your tank. I would suggest you leave it as is if the engine is running correctly.
