Which Pulley Wrench
Hello all, so my fan belt isn't squealing, but I have almost an inch and a half to two inches of give and it looks kind of old, so I want to change it. Few questions, I've read through the writeup on Pelican and a few other threads.
Picture of my pulley below Cheers, Martin

Where does it hook?
The slots over the belt?

No. The single hole right over the nut you see at 1 o'clock in your photo.

martin: re shims -- presume you can't disassemble the pulley without the wrench -- shims between the pulley halves help spread the pulley halves and make the belt looser. If you had no shims, your pulley would be at its tightest possible setting. Shims are pretty small and, if you can't remove the pulley bolt, I'd bet they're hiding behind the bolt.

I'll have a look when I yank it off over the weekend. Just need to get the pulley wrench.

The shims are hidden by the large keyed washer.
There is six of them and they could be distributed as 3 on each side of the half pulley or 4 in front and 2 behind. Remember how they are distribute when you take them appart. ![]()

Hey all. Thanks for the tips. I guess I won't know until it comes off! 710 is the right size?

Yes, 710 is the OEM size but:
Porsche is just under 710MM (3 in 3 out) a real PITA to align the shims due to tightness Conti Belt is 712-14MM+/- (1 in 5 out) Adjust as needed.

Belt adjust this may help
Martin, this may help when you start. Get a piece of 1x4 lumber about 4 inches long
and place this down on left side below cross member--see photos, then use a good tool set and 15/16 socket ,i have found over the years that the factory 24mm can slip and give you nasty skinned knuckles. This method you only have to hold one tool at a time and is very easy. The reverse to tighten. |

Took me a sec
Took me a sec but now I see the wrench pressed up against the block of wood. That's a really good idea actually.
I was going to use a regular socket or breaker but I actually thought the impact wrench might be better? Less twist?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't use a spanner to remove/install the fan belt.
I use an Allen wrench on the alternator spindle and an open end wrench on the nut... HTH, Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 425k miles |

Martin... If you're pulling fan, suggest putting antiseize on shaft. Makes it much easier to pull fan downstream. There's a woodruff key on alternator shaft---watch for it as fan comes off shaft. Chances are that key will remain in place... also chance it might not.

Put grease on the shims and that will hold them together as you assemble the pulley half.
