911/930 turbo starting issue

Hi
Apologies if this question /problem has been addressed before but I'm at my whits end trying to figure this out .I have a 1983 930 turbo .I hadn't ran it for some time (in excess of about a year ) .Prior to this I ran the engine at home and the gas ran out .

I took the battery out and left the vehicle covered as I wasn't using it .Ive recharged the battery and put 20 litres (uk) of fuel in the tank which as I say was empty .

I've tried to turn over the engine ,it won't crank and it just clicks (tick tick tick tick) and the battery light flickers on an off .

Prior to this it would turn over .

Is 20 litres of fuel enough ? Is it this causing it not to crank or is my battery an issue ?

I had a refurbed alternator about 2 years ago .

I'm a newbie so I don't quite know where to start
Your help would be appreciated

Many thanks

Derek

"click click click" is your starter solenoid, not engaging due to a fail solenoid or not enough voltage.

What is the voltage reading on the battery? Our cars really need 12.5+ but more importantly enough amps to crank the engine. I would pull the battery and have it tested at a FLAPS.

But before that, why not try to jump start her? If starter is the culprit, she will start right up with a gentle push and quick release of the clutch in gear ( 2nd or Reverse, depending on which way she is facing for a safe little run ), then place the ebrake and check he voltage of the battery while on it should read 13.8+

If over 12.5 at rest, whack the solenoid with a BFH.

Dead battery... Just because you charged it doesnt mean its good. Check the voltage WHILE cranking...

That too but it requires you to go under the car safely and have a helper turn the key. make sure ebrake is up and in neutral. Use a long socket extension and the BFH.

It is located RHS rear wheel next to the heater flapper behind the CV axle.

Draco ,thanks for reply .Im a complete newbie at some things 930 based so please bare with me if my questions sound well duffussy .

How do I check the voltage at the battery ? Do I do this disconnected from the car ? Using a multi meter ?

What the heck is having my battery tested at "Flaps"?

All help is greatly appreciated because the 930 is far more capable than I am at the moment

Solenoid is the sausage shaped appendage attached to the starter.

Oh no Brother,

We all started from nothing at some point, you are doing the correct ting by even asking

FLAPS ( Friendly Local Auto Parts Store ), they can LOAD test the battery to insure the health of the battery and it Cold Crank Amps. I usually go to couple of FLAPS to make sure I get the same readings as I found the operator may be a dunce or the machine is in-accurate.

Yes, use a Multi-meter and with the battery in the car, place the probes right onthe terminals to get your base reading when cold or sitting over night.

Starter and Solenoid:

Tap or smack the smaller cylinder. while trying to start her.

I think you had it here Brother Jim.

Derek...

You in driver's seat... car in second gear (some will prefer 1st) with clutch pushed in... ignition on... maybe 2 guys to help push car... get up some rolling speed and let clutch out.

Derek, the very first thing you should do, as others suggested, is remove the battery from the car and take it to a local shop or auto parts store, and have them load test it. Even measuring resting battery voltage can be inconclusive (typical resting voltage of a 12v car battery is 12.4-12.6), as you can see proper voltage indicated on your multi-meter even when several cells in the battery are non-operational. By far, the most likely cause of your starter "click" is the battery not supplying enough amperage to the starter solenoid due to low charge or bad cells.

Change the oil and filter before starting, once you have a good battery crank her a few times to get some oil pressure before starting.

Thanks boys .I bought a multi meter and having charged the battery overnight and left it for around a day I tested it ,it's reading 10.55 volts I'm guessing my battery is kaput ? Need to buy a new one ?
