Question Ok, I need to get rid of those CHROME H1 HEADLIGHT TRIM RINGS, ADVICE PLEASED!!!!!

hey all,

I'm expanding on a previous thread on this subject. My car is in the shop getting a tranny "semi" rebuild. Anyhow, I have been wanting to change the chrome headlight trim rings on my '85 targa. I have a black car and would like to match the paint.

In the past, 2 ideas have been suggested by the Pelican population (by the way, thank you).

1) Sandblast the chrome, and then prime and paint. Great idea, but no one wants to deal with a small project.

2) Get the trim Kit. Well, I don't think there is a trim kit FOR H-1'S!!. I see one here for H'4's, but the screw holes and adjustment screws are way different. H1's have 4 screws, so the kit for the H'4 is a bust for me.

PLEASE, ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I CAN'T STAND THE CHROME!!!

OR

DOES ANYONE WANT TO SWAP MY CHROME FOR THEIR BLACK. THE CHROME ARE IN ALMOST PERFECT CONDITION.

PLEASE, ANY INPUT WILL BE APPRECIATED!!

thanks,
JON

These things come up for sale on ebay all the time. I also think it's a job yu could tackle pretty easily yourself. There's a special primer that's made to cover chrome. I don't think any sandblasting is required.

I'm sure a small shop that does sandblasting would be happy to do the job. Especially if you call in on a Friday afternoon and slip the guy $20 "beer money".

The plating shop can take it off as well as they can put it on.

And should you want to ditch the chrome rings and replace them with new painted ones? Uh, could I send you my street address? If you're going to toss them? PLEASE toss them my way.

Jon,

These headlight rings were once chrome.

if you paint them, turning the adjusting screw could easily chip the paint. paintable trim rings are safer that way.

Hey all,

What quick responses. Thanks, but so far my arms are still up in the air. I've been told by many of you not to paint the chrome, as the paint will surely peel and chip off easily.

With regard to the trim rings, the only ones that come close are the H'4 trim rings, which have the fastening screw on the bottom middle of the ring (6:00).......well, guess what, there's no screw hole in that part of the H1 housing. IS THERE A TRIM KIT MADE ESPECIALLY FOR THE H-1?? ANY FURTHER ADVICE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Anyone out there know how to sandblast? haha.

Have you tried the H4 rings? The paintable cover has only the 1 hole at the bottom for the screw which holds them on. They must be removed for headlight adjustment. I would be very surprised if they don't fit H1 as well. Never tried though.

Sell the H-1 on ebay, you will get around 600 for them and buy a new pair of h-4 and still have 300 bucks in your pocket.

Thanks so much for the leads. My search is bringing up a few finds. I'll keep you posted.

Anyhow, I'm a bit hesitant on downgrading to H4's. That would be a downgrading right?, going from H1's to H4's?

every H1 light i ever saw had the attaching screw on the bottom. the paintable trim rings use a piggyback double screw setup to attach. they cover the chrome ring as well as the 4 adjusting screws. replace the original bottom screw with the one in the kit which has a small threaded hole thru it, then the trim ring screw goes into that.

Be carefull with sandblasting! Depending on the media used (eg. sand, black beauty, etc.), it can leave a very rough surface, unsuitable for what you have in mind. I'm not sure if softer media like walnut shells will scuff the surface sufficiently to give the paint some bite. Glass beads might work better. Discuss what you want to do with these rings (paint body color) with whomever you commission to do the job. If they don't know what you're talking about, find someone else. As an alternative, you could just scuff them up with fine sandpaper before painting.
Good luck.

Cool

The trim rings fit both H4 & H1's. You take the trim rings off to adjust your aiming. Like your going to do that real often!

H1's were probably only offered in chrome.
They were offered on european cars for a long time before the body color trim stuff.

Chrome shops are probably the best at taking off the chrome. They could replate with cadmium making a base material for you paint.

Because of the value of H1's now, I wouldn't do anything to alter them. Buy the rings.

Good luck,
