Oil Cooler
I am planning on replacing the trombone type oil cooler under the right front fender of my 1978 911SC with a radiator type cooler with a thermostatically operated cooling fan. What brand/type cooler would you recommend? I am looking for a quality kit that supplies everything needed for the installation.
Thanks in advance for advice and recommendations. Black holes explode when they are about ten to the one hundredth power years old, time observed from the outside. |

You find everything you need here on Pelican! I recently bought a complete kit.

When I had my 80 SC I replaced the trombone with a Carrera cooler. Everything fits like factory (because it is). You may have to move your horns slightly so you have adequate tire/cooler clearance.

Everything fit well, was able to move horns slightly forward, just needed a little rewiring.

This is one of the projects in Wayne's book "101 Projects for your Porsche 911".

My trials and tribulations should help you get sorted:
Elephant fender oil cooler and fan installation The stock fan doesn't move much air, and it's about $500 new. Aftermarket fans will require you to trim the bracket that the horns are attached to or purchase a later style bracket from an '87-9. I suspect Elephant will get you the most complete kit, but I would use a different fan. |

Tremelune, thanks for all of the info in your post. Very informative. I have looked at Elephant's stuff and like it. Probably will look for a good after market fan and manually switch it from the cockpit. I have the 3.0 engine but have installed PMO's, Solex cams, SSI's, sport muffler, domed pistons, ect. I can tell that it runs hotter than the stock CIS engine.

I have a 77 3.0 I imported from the UK to OZ.
All stock inc trombone but the higher air temps here equaled higher temps in the engine. I went with the later Carrerra cooler and fan, drove the car mid summer (40C) without the fan connected and engine temps had dropped a huge amount. I still havn't connected the fan! cheers Bill

You can see my install guide here, I'm told it was a big help and that did my heart good: Definitive Elephant Racing Oil Cooler Install Guide (for noobs, anyway)
Huge improvement in keeping the oil temps down. Good luck with the install. |
