Torsion Bar Sizes

Colleagues, what are the stock torsion bar sizes for an '83 SC, and for an '86 Carrera? Is it 19 and 25 for both? Or did those big lumbering Carreras get stiffer torsion bars that the lighter, more nimble SC's did not need?

sup, thats alot of work to upgrade such a minor amount of spring rate between the 78-85 and the 86 on. i was always under the impression that 87 was the 1st g-50 year but possibly thats why the 86 seem to have gotten larger bars?? larger diameter, but shorter in length. the 915 and g-50 cars have different bars, but you knew that.

i went to 21/27 combo and love it. not so stiff in around town driving, but very noticeable when pushing it.

I went with 21F and 28R with Bilstein HD's in F and Sport's in R and I have no complaints. It's a Cab BTW.

23/29 and I swapped in Carrera 915 sway bars on my 3.6 powered SC cabriolet. Stiff as my knees after a 40 mile bike ride. Handles like a monorail in the curves. My kids hated the ride, I love it.

Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

Still happy with your 23/29 set up? I was concidering either a 22/29 or 21/28. Confort level for the wife is important.... can't decide

I went with 21/27, Bilstein HD, and E.Racing polybronze in a lightweight '75 with 3.2 engine. Can't be beat. Not a track car, just a fast street ride. Wife friendly.

Thanks, that's nice it's still wife friendly and light weight too.

I too am using ER PB, Carrera Sways, jury still out on the Bilstein HD or Sport in the fronts with the Sports in the rear. The car is at its full weight of 3046 lbs and a Targa with 16" 7 & 8's.

Stance will be set at euro height when complete and since she will be at her full weight, I want a firm flat ride without the worry of skittering about at speed while driving on our wonderful roads here in CA.

4th power...

Don,t forget that the strength of the "spring" increases to the 4th power of the diameter, so, going from 19 to 21 is a 50 percent increase in stiffness.

I did a 100 percent increase on the green car and it was a bit too much. Flat cornering and great at thunder hill but a bit harsh on rough roads.

I'm running 23/31 on my G50 car with adjustable monotubes tuned for them. I think that the setup is good, but a tad stiff in the front and can push a bit. I'm actually going 21/31 soon. Rear is good overall.

I think I read somewhere that the Ruf Yellowbird used the factory sized torsion bars but went pretty stiff on the sway bars. Does anyone know if there's some fact to this?

I'm running 22FR and 28RR T-bars on ER rubber bushes with custom valved Bilsteins. The ride's a little bit stiff on anything but smooth roads. However, in fast twisties, even on roughish pavement, it comes into its own, absorbing harsh bumps and remaining stable and planted. I just have to drive her a little bit hard and she comes alive.

Steve Weiner set up my car. 21/29 and when I set the corner balance with 170lb driver weight the cars was at 3,052lbs. I think it's perfect and we run the same roads.
I've had the too stiff car before. I don't think I would even consider the 23 up front.

The most sublime setup I have owned was stock torsion bars up front with Sport Bilsteins, and 26mm torsion bars with HD Bilsteins in the rear.

Do you think 22's would be too stiff with the rear 29's? In going through my parts locker, I found my new front TB's and they are 22's.

Just curious after your statement on the 23's and I was planning on ordering them (29's) tomorrow (Monday). Or changing everything up by going 21/28's. which means selling the 22's.

No. I would try the 22's if I had them. The 21's are firmer, but still feel smooth. The 22's may be getting close to harsh. But I doubt it would be bad. I think the 23's are getting to the point your butt starts bouncing out of the seat at times.
