The Founder Must Part Ways

Well ladies and gentlemen, it has been a blast.
I need to sell my baby. I know, I know... can you believe it?
Believe me when I say that this has been the root cause for more than a few sleepless nights.
I've thought long and hard on the subject and have come to one conclusion. To get me and my lovely wife, where we want to be, it will require being Porscheless for a while.
This is by no means, the end. And trust me, you will probably be seeing more of me even after she is gone.

I'm sad, but if losing my prized possession will help ensure that Erin and I have an easier start at married life, then I am all for it.

I will miss my car horribly, but in the end... it is only a car.

So, with this being said, I first would like to make it known that I hereby appoint Doug Zielke as the new leader of the faithful.
I know he will carry on the tradition of name calling and general unpleasantness towards Carrera owners and the like.

Second, I would ask you all, my Pelican brothers (and sister) that if you know anyone who might be interested in the best d@mned SC on earth, to please get in tough with me.
Someone is going to luck out bigtime... I can only pray that the next owner of my baby takes good care of her and sends me postcards at Christmas.

Well, that was pretty hard to say... believe it or not.
Again, do not think I will abandon the Marque, I keep trying to think of this as a temporary thing.

Love you guys,

Joeaksa 02-01-2003 08:21 PM

Lee,

Sorry to hear that you are going to leave the SC group but the rest of us know that you are only making way for a Carrera to sit in the garage!

Find something better and soon! Our thoughts and wishes are with you and your family always...

Joe

Here's my [similar] story and a follow-up. I sold my Corvette to buy the engagement ring I gave to my (now) wife. She appreciated the sentiment and the true cost. Later, when we were in our house and I completed my Master's degree, she returned the favor and bought me a new 'Vette. She knew how tough it was to give up my car, appreciated being more important to me, and repaid in kind when the time was right. Today she is very supportive of my Porsche addiction - 'cause I proved that as much as I love and cherish my cars, she is more important.

See - it was really just a mercenary plot! Muhahaha.

Wanting to catch the attention of the love of his life, a man walks several thousand miles to the ocean. There, he boils sea water to make salt (it's an old story and salt had value), and returns to the object of his affections. "But you had to walk all that way to get this...!" she said. "The trip is part of the gift" was his reply.

Leland, I respect and admire a great many things about you. I only hope you will keep your promise to stay in touch with us. I still intend to meet you one day. Please accept my best wishes for a happy married life.

Jim

maxnine11 02-01-2003 08:33 PM

gee Leland, the flags are already at half-mast today....now I really feel bummed out!!http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/smi10.gif but do what you must do. I am sure you have thought long and hard. I am sure it won't be long 'til another Porsche finds you...max

tchanson 02-01-2003 08:36 PM

Leland,

911's can always be replaced (especially common SC's :)) and, I'm sure its nothing compared to the pain that was involved in having to part with a truly irreplaceable vehicle like the Pimpster...

Good luck to both of you.

Tim

gary-o 02-01-2003 08:42 PM

Leland, you are doing the right thing. I know it isn't going to get easier just because a "stranger" agrees with your decision, but, family comes first.
You also picked the right one to carry the torch while you are between SC's. Doug will no doubt continue to do the SCWDP proud.
Best of luck,
Gary

Somebody better be gettin' some serious lovin' for the gesture he's making!!! ;)

No biggie. There's all sorts of 911's out there and you're now more than capable of finding a good replacement in the future.

nostatic 02-01-2003 08:45 PM

hey, if *I* managed to get another 911, it will be a piece of cake for Leland.

There's always another car...we try not to think that way with wives :)

arcsine 02-01-2003 08:54 PM

Keep the faith brother. Being Porsche-less shall to pass.

Bill Douglas 02-01-2003 08:54 PM

See ya Mate.

autobonrun 02-01-2003 08:56 PM

I agree with the others.

Long term you're making the most intelligent decision. Family must come first. Even the best teams step back and punt sometimes. Just gives them better field position for the next series of downs.

You're still young, just the first quarter so to speak. There will be many other opportunities to replace the car later if you desire.

Good luck.

speeder 02-01-2003 10:42 PM

Even though we have not met yet, I have admired you from the perspective of this board since I joined. You have shown yourself to be mature and unselfish in every situation you have shared w/ us, and I am betting the farm that a lot of good is coming for you. We crazy car nuts dream about Porsches, especially when we are Porsche-less, so it just means that the next one will be better. Stay in touch w/ us, please.

Jack Olsen 02-01-2003 11:05 PM

Good decision, of course, Lee. Cars are fun, but Erin is forever.

You'll have another 911 before you know it.

MMARSH 02-01-2003 11:23 PM

I know how you feel, but your making the right decision. I sold my Carrera so we could buy our House, I know I didn't feel nearly as bad as you do for having to sell an SC, but I feel your pain. No regrets though. You'll get another one.

Keep posting on the board, I think everyone has gotten alot of laughs from your past posts and your presence here would be missed.

Dutchie 02-02-2003 12:08 AM

Sorry to hear that Leland :( I hope its doesen,t mean we have to miss your humor on the board here. Loved your list with the 101 projects the "Carrera Tips" where very usefull ;) Hope you get another 911 soon.

Cheers,

Ed

dickster 02-02-2003 12:25 AM

i've seen how much you've invested into that car, so it must have been a tough decision - hope she respects you in the morning!

still, as a carrera owner - what do i care;)

Milu 02-02-2003 12:43 AM

Damn, but I'm going to miss the insults, even if I know it was only an outward demonstration of your jealousy, insecurity and inadequacy at owning an sc instead of a CARRERA;)

I know it hurts, but theres always another car and the next one will be faster, more reliable and will benefit from your experience with this one.

Adam 02-02-2003 12:54 AM

Selling your SC, what's the big deal?

Oh.. the SC... oh, Venkman.. I'm so sorry :(

Stick around, Lee. Try to drag out the sale as long as you can!

k9handler 02-02-2003 01:15 AM

it will be no time at all and you will be back in a 911.
You know the EOD guys are the ones with the big bucks! Ha Ha...higher monthly pay and a career field bonus to boot...just a matter of time before you are back. Good luck, keep in touch.

Mikkel 02-02-2003 02:36 AM

Leland

Hopefully you'll be "between Porsches" rather than "Porscheless" :) Good luck selling your car and good luck finding another 911 when that time comes.

cary 02-02-2003 02:44 AM

You'll be back................. It took me 8 years to get back after selling my 75S .
But it gets worse when your without. Now I have 3. And I keep looking. It's a sickness ................

Sounds like your going to be making some big changes in the coming months. New job & moving ?

Good Luck :) :)

MrKJBlue 02-02-2003 03:32 AM

As I've just got married myself I can understand what your saying, in fact I'm thinking along similar lines myself.
Its strange how priorities can change so suddenly.
Good luck with it all.

Dave Ploss 02-02-2003 04:02 AM

I just got my 87 911 after an 11 year absence. It was well worth it and my wife was worth it big time.

Maybe next time you'll get a Carrera! ;)

Good luck....If you are ever near Boston and need to take a p-car for a ride or a day, just let me know.

Dave

atlporsche 02-02-2003 04:02 AM

You are gonna SOB like a baby when the new owner drives away.

I sold my pride and joy (while my porsche was an undriveable pile of parts) so my wife could get something better than her rusted 130k mile buick century.

I sobbed for the next half hour driving home as my car puttered of into the distance.

sjd

Dantilla 02-02-2003 04:38 AM

The long hooded bretheren would be interested in your car. To burn at the stake! Would an offering like that get my car back on the road sooner?

All seriousness aside, yep, you're doing the right thing. My wife knows that I would sell both the P-cars today if they were causing any tension between us. Because she knows that she is first (and precious), she has no problem with parts all over the garage, and wants me to go all out when it comes to buying a new helmet or other safety gear. Can you believe that? She even wants me to protect my Porsche crazy head! There will always be used 911s for sale. First things first. Life gets better. Insert your own mushy thought here. Etc.

jabb 02-02-2003 05:59 AM

How about we all kick in $10 so he can keep the 911
It could be a wedding gift :D

Best of luck keep in touch

DonDavis 02-02-2003 06:29 AM

hmm,

That blows almost as much as Carreras. ( Just for you, Lee )

About 4 months before I got married in '93, I sold my 74 BMW 2002tii.

Doing it sucked but I knew it was for the right reasons. Here I am 10 years later selling my 911 for the right reasons. And as atlporsche said, sobbing is imminent. sigh

Lee, shoot me an email off line. When are you looking at relocating?

Mark Wilson 02-02-2003 06:54 AM

Lee,
Have really enjoyed your humor and wit and hope you will still pop in on the board. You'll be back...

stone43 02-02-2003 07:11 AM

This is like Deja Vu all over again. This is a good thing. Seriously. I spent about 5 years in between Porsches (marriage, house, kid, etc.) You will undoubetedly purchase a better one the next time. Perhaps a Carrerra.

But you will have withdrawl symptoms such as:

You will stop in your tracks everytime you see one.

You will do the same everytime you Hear one (this is the worst since you will also have to look at it drive by)

You will probably snoop around the board for a while checking on the progress of your "plot"

No worries, it is just a car, plenty more to go around, bad economy makes them cheap enough.

Congrats on the Marriage thing. And you thought the Porsche was challenging......................

JeremyD 02-02-2003 07:23 AM

And you thought the Porsche was expensive...

Glasgow 911SC 02-02-2003 07:39 AM

Don't you have a spare kidney or something that you could sell instead??

Seriously, good luck and make sure you hang around here!

HawgRyder 02-02-2003 08:20 AM

Lee...best wishes for a very long and wonderful marriage.
It's obvious that you are willing to compromise, I hope Erin appreciates it.
And , when the time is right....you will have the good sense and opportunity to buy an early, long hood, with MFI ! LOL
Keep in touch with the board if you can.
Bob

pwd72s 02-02-2003 08:34 AM

Porsche made lots of cars, Lee. God only made one Erin for you. Be good, and hang in. Things will come back to you twice over. I have a vision for your "better" car, and it's not one of those overweight Carrreas...nope. Remember, I owe you a drive in an early 911S. Once you experience that, it'll be all over...the founder of the SCWDP will come over to the side of enlightenment... ;) Seriously, my best wishes for you both, and the Feds are fools if they don't snap you up the day you leave EOD...(I'd email, but I think my ISP got virused. Nothing in or out of here for a couple of days now. :()

Tim Walsh 02-02-2003 09:16 AM

You really are making the right decision. Family comes first. The car can be replaced family can't.

Even when you're Between Porsches, You will be more than welcome at any meet I ever attend, and you're welcome to drive my car at that meet. Guys like you are far and few between.

usafa 02-02-2003 09:29 AM

Sorry to see you having to sell. I fully understand how hard it will be, but think of the experience you have gained with the car. Next time around won't be as expensive or nerve racking.

By the way, thanks for being there to defend our country in these trying times.

Doug Zielke 02-02-2003 09:59 AM

I had my ancient computer apart this morning, working on it, while watching The Racer's Group #66 ace Daytona on Speed TV.

Imagine my sadness when I plugged it in, only to read this unthinkable news about our Founders retirement.
While we fully understand your reasons Lee, the legions of SCWDP faithful will mark this day with deep regret.

However, I fully expect we will see your return to the ranks someday, sooner than later.
*Not* in a weak-bolts, Carrera 3.2......nor a rusted-out earlee car. No, that's not the style of our Founder. When you return, there will be a special SC out "there".....somewhere, with your name on it.

Until then, best wishes to you and Erin!

Edit: It just came to me after I posted the above, that it was your Engine Rebuild Overview, that gave me the confidence to tackle my own engine this Winter. Thank you, Lee.
