Eric,
Have you checked the oil level in your 915 lately? Or changed the gear oil, ever? ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler |

5th sits highest out of the gear oil and when the oil gets low, 5th suffers. galling results that swepco won't fix. if it was the ring and pinion, it would do it in all gears.

Eric,
By 'oil level in your 915 lately?' ... I meant: Have you checked the gear oil level in your transaxle? It is supposed to be level with the bottom of the filler plug hole in the driver's side of the case, with the car parked on a level garage floor. And, if it turns out to be low, my suspicions are that the damage John Walker described is the cause of the noise you hear in fifth gear. It takes a 17 mm Allen wrench or drive bit to remove the filler and drain plugs. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa 1992 Dodge Dakota 5.2 4X4 parts hauler [This message has been edited by Early_S_Man (edited 10-26-2001).] |

Man Guy's, I checked the level's on everything and all is well with them.. on the way home last night the noise made it's self known thru all of the gers and no it's very loud it is a rubbing noise.. grinding if you will.. under the car in the right rear.. not engine.. she rev's fine and and sound's great it is something else so I have stopped driving her until i can get under and check it out It's a grinding noise that is continuous now with every revolution of the wheel.. SO I'll have to crawl under there and look for a sign of wear....if you guy's have any helping idea's on places to look first please let me know... you guy's have always been MOST helpful to me..
Thanks in advance, Eric |

get up to speed where you hear the hum, and push in the clutch and coast. if it stays, it might be a rear wheel bearing. sometimes they don't hum much until you get the speed up.
